Is this 'Ash Wednesday' new? I haven't seen it until this year.

Ash Wednesday is almost as old as Christianity itself. In the West, it's always the day after Mardi Gras.

Mostly it is a Catholic tradition so it isn't seen in Protestant circles.

Interesting, I'd heard of lent and all that, but I literally hadn't seen anyone put ash on their forehead for it.
