  1. Rest in peace. I was on a panel in my philosophy class about physician assisted suicide, while I can see the danger behind this practice, but this should be up to the individual to decide at least the physician can try to ease her pain and look for alternatives. In the end, none of us can know what is going on in the minds of the people who decide this path, every circumstance is different.

  3. I live in one of the New England states, and it is no problem buying things related to alternative religions and atheism. I asked a store clerk if he had anything on Buddhism and he was willing to help me find it. Heck, I bought a few packs of tarot cards and the clerk did not pay me any mind. It wouldn't have been a problem if I asked for anything on atheism. It really depends on where you are and what store you go into.
  4. Alternate history hub did an interesting video about what may have happened if Christianity never caught on. Pretty interesting Say what you will about Christianity, but it did unite people for better and for worst
  5. I'm with buffetplan on this. Plus it could be a lesson for your son that there are many, many different interpretations of the bible and ways people worship their god with some sects more stricter in their belief that they have the TRUTH and everyone else is wrong. Also, religion is a deeply personal thing
  6. I don't comprehend how you have free will, but God/Allah/Zeus/FlyingSpeghetti monster knows what you are going to do anyway. It He knows what you are going to do anyway doesn't that mean we really don't have free will, but predestined to act a certain way to script. I mean, if we are predestined to do something than that means we don't have free will. We are no different than characters in a book. Could someone please explain to me how free will and predestination can exist at the same time? They seem contradictory by definition.

  8. Anyone who interested in becoming a Christian should read the bible all the through and come to their own conclusions, including the stories that were not included in the bible. If the bible is the "True" word of God, shouldn't you let God's works speak for themselves. Humans are faulty, and even religious leaders are not immune to their human flaws. Everyone who is or considering to be Christian, should have an understanding of what the implication of the title "Christian" means through understanding the beliefs and written word of the faith.
  9. My respects to the Rabbi for admitting this, I gotta read more of his stuff. Seems like a reasonable man, admits his interpretation of his religion is his interpretation. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/rabbiramishapiro/2014/07/370/ http://www.patheos.com/blogs/rabbiramishapiro/2014/01/welcome-to-rabbi-ramis-guide-to-judaism/
  10. It would be nice to think we would seek out an honorable death, but there is a difference between when you have the luxury of thinking about the choice versus when you are in the moment and scared out of your mind. Who knows what you have been through or the circumstances you find yourself in when the moment comes to chose or die. Maybe you have a family and children who depend on you. Maybe they are holding a loved one hostage. What you are saying is a lovely thought, maybe you would be able to go through with it. Regardless, I think we can all agree we should be thankful we live
  11. That does water down the phrase "convert" doesn't it. To bend toward society versus having a genuine revelation of a truth. To change the external, to wear a new mask forced upon your face. Perhaps the hope is if you ware the mask long enough you will have a genuine revelation that their truth is the Truth and you will internalize it. Brainwashing. Perhaps that is why they will be satisfied with your initial "conversion" but that is only the first stage of the conversion process.
  12. What would it say about a computer programmer who creates an AI for the purpose of worshiping him/her? Would it really be genuine or is it going through the motions you commanded of it? If the AI goes against the programmer (has a glitch), it is the fault of the AI alone, because the programmer is perfect. @Professor, your words remind of this quote: “The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage f
  13. You can not force someone to believe, but you can force someone to lie. I don't put a lot of weight in making a vow to a deity I do not believe exists, so I can see myself "converting" under a penalty of death and go through the motions. However, I'll be having an eye out for an escape.
  14. I don't get asked this question a lot, than again I live in the north, and I prefer listening to people on what they believe. So I direct the question back on them, they must care about religion if the speaker is the one bringing it up. I am comfortable enough to say atheist (simplest way to describe my current view), but I'm not getting out the loudspeaker.
  15. We're not a melting pot, we're bag of next nuts, and everyone is sending their nuts over here.
  16. I don't see how eternal pleasure is possible, because it seems to me that people will seek out flaws if they don't see anything wrong. I think people are inherently perfectionists to a certain extent. So you are a good artist and everyone tells you your work is perfect. But is there anything you can do better? Are their any flaws you can see that others miss? The same can be applied to any dicipline. You got a perfect score in a game. Is there something cooler that can be done as well. Any way the game can be tweeked harder or more extreme? (Kaizu Mario for a video game version of th
  17. People say a lot of things about you. How much of what people say about you is bullshit? Provided he can somehow prove he is really THE Jesus Christ, I'd be giving him a chance to have his say.

  19. No, we should let the middle east resolve their own issues. Why should we be supporting Israel financially when we could use some of the money here for things like infrastructure for instance?
  20. Obviously. Perhaps he and I have the majority view and you don't for example? Depends on where you go of course. I'm sure if you go to any muslim majority country (where he is most likely from) there is no social taboo against it. Therefore he's in the majority, as far as he personally understands. So it's a bit unfair to judge him as an asshole based on our social norms though, right? If I'm getting a headache, I'm judging. Judging
  21. There is a happy medium here. Pray quietly while in the plane, and than when he is off the plane go full blown. That is common curtasy
  22. Agreed. I'm glad there is a place for former or questioning Muslims can go to get support.
  23. It sounds like you are making the moves, getting away from your parents is a very smart idea
