  1. The so-called end-times as described in Matthew 24 have already occurred in the year 70 A.D. with the Roman destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple and the subsequent exile of many of the surviving Jews. Revelation also does not pertain to us or our future. Rather, Revelation pertains to Caesar Nero's persecution of Christians in 65 A.D. and the 666 beast is also Nero. Therefore, whatever happens by way of terrorism or anything else has nothing whatsoever to do with the Bible or end-times.
  2. The threat of terrorism is a legitimate issue for a presidential candidate to address. In fact, any presidential candidate who fails to address it, is not dealing with an important issue that the American people have a right to hear the views of that candidate. The reason it is legitimate for a candidate to speak of France's recent unfortunate troubles is because it may very well represent the updated mode of international terrorism. Rather than plan something as difficult as a 911 style attack, they are using a tactic which is much simpler to carry out and, therefore, more likely to be
  3. Given that the survey was not of scholars, it means next to nothing in terms of the truth of whether a Jesus figure actually existed. However, it says a whole lot about what this group thinks. Obviously, they have not been indoctrinated by the church and that is important.
  4. Locked. Not appropriate for the testimonial forum. Note the title, "Testimonies of Former Christians". You are not a former Christian, but by your very words a current Christian. One more such incursion into the Testimonies forum and you will be given a warning point!!!
  5. This is not appropriate for posting in the Testimonial forum. Don't try this again!
  6. Some, perhaps, but not the vast, vast majority caught up in religion. Those I know personally who are Christians and, therefore, worship Jesus are good people, many Christians because that is how they were raised. Even the true believers I know are decent people.
  7. Very good, informative post. Most opposition to homeschooling is based on ignorance of actual homeschool experience except for the weird outliers that make the news. I know families who homeschool their kids and their kids are well adjusted socially, intelligent and well educated.
  8. Some people are atheists by default because they have never had any real exposure to religion perhaps being born into a non religious family. Those people, therefore, have never really thought through their basis for atheism. So when some of them are introduced to religion, they simply fall for it.
  9. Take care of yourself. It has been great knowing you on ExC. I am glad all is well with you. I think it is a good idea to look into and explore spiritual matters as you are doing. Come back any time to say hello to all your friends who like to hang out at Dave's little online oasis for all of us apostates. Glory!!
  10. The issue is under moderator review. Please be patient. Thank-you
  11. If understood, this story does not do that at all. The story is about a little girl who is dying and who has been in and out of hospitals for her whole life. She is now at the terminal stage and her doctor has informed the parents that her next hospitalization will most likely end in her death. The parents, armed with this sad news, are trying to do what is best for their beloved daughter's last days. The choice for them is to bring her to the hospital where there will be very invasive and painful procedures performed to try to get the child past this episode, but with the likely outcome o
  12. Very interesting, BAA, and well worth thinking about. Yes, I suppose it would demonstrate that nothing supernatural needed, no soul necessary for self awareness and intelligence. The only thing is that for people to achieve such a self aware, intelligent device does not eliminate the necessity for another self aware and intelligent being (human beings in this case) to have created it. Thus it does not disprove that but for a pre-existing self aware, intelligent being no self aware, intelligence can exist. So the need for a creator to accomplish something like that would still not be eli
  13. What you say does not necessarily hold because the machine with self awareness was created by living beings with self awareness, too. What your hypothetical would show is that if you start with a self aware intelligent being, that being can create machines with similar attributes, sort of how Christians and other theists would say God did it. To me, there has to be another proven example of non living matter achieving self awareness without the intervention of a self aware living being. That may very well be what happened on earth, but as yet no one can explain how or even define conscio
  14. Are you in the film? What specific things do you want help with in rebutting? Welcome to ExC!!
  15. This situation is complicated and I am not so sure the parents have made the wrong decision. The unfortunate child suffers from a genetic disorder that affects her whole body in serious ways. It has gotten so severe that her doctors have told her parents that the next time she enters the hospital with some illness or the other that she is prone to due to her genetic problem that she will likely die from pneumonia. In other words, it is just a matter of time before this poor child passes on. As I read this, the parents are trying to decide whether she dies at home or in the hospital. Th
  16. There are so many things that we do not understand. One of those things is consciousness, an awareness of self. To me the issue is not the soul vs. the brain, but a full explanation of consciousness, particularly when seen from an evolutionary standpoint. In that regard, we start with material which is not living and therefore has no consciousness. Then over billions of years beginning with a one cell life form and going all the way forward to today with self aware, intelligent creatures. How did it go from an unaware, not living matter all the way to full consciousness? That's the myste
  17. I hope everything is okay in your life. If you were able to step back and read these words of yours as I and others read them, you might begin earnestly to rethink where you are with your life. No, people who see that you may be going too far into this "vision" and "mystical" world of yours are not deluded by demons and such as you imagine them to be. That is your mind's way of protecting you from reality by portraying others as having been deceived when, in fact, you are the one who is deceived. And here's the really difficult part for you, and I say it in sincerity and only with a caring
  18. There's a good chance that if you simply stop going to church, no one will try real hard to get in touch with you. It's fairly common that that is how leaving a church plays out. You are not duty bound to explain anything to anyone if you don't want to. This may feel to you like you are separating from a 30 year partner, but it almost certainly will not feel that way to them. I hope it all works well for you.
  19. I wouldn't call the movie disturbing. I'd say it's deep and emotional. It leaves you with a lot to think about. I have watched it twice now, and intend to watch it several more times to try and pick up on some of the nuances.
  20. Looking forward to seeing these.
  21. Interesting because the scripture you quoted said that which is seen (as in a human being can actually see it) is temporary and that which is unseen is eternal. Therefore, the only things that are eternal are those things we cannot see. If we can see it, according to the authority of the scripture you chose to quote, it is temporary. Now you go to other scripture for the proposition that the Holy Spirit can be seen. I get it, because the Holy Spirit can be seen, it is temporary and not eternal. That is how one would get out of what would otherwise be a contradiction in scripture. So no
  22. If, as the scripture says, the things that are seen are temporary and the things that are unseen are eternal, and we go the further step you are taking, the things that are unseen and are eternal is what explains, at least in part, the Holy Spirit, then the very fact that you are showing us pictures of what you claim are the Holy Spirit, they can't be because we see them and they are temporary and being temporary they cannot be the Holy Spirit. So by the authority of the scripture that you posted as authoritative, we know you are not showing us pictures of the Holy Spirit and you cannot ev
  23. Those pictures made my skin crawl. I like the concept of parent child events in all their variations (Mother-Son, Mother-Daughter; Father-Son, Father-Daughter). I fault the photographers in all but one of the photos in the link. The one I liked was the father with his two daughters. I thought he looked very fatherly and caring. In the other photos, the photographer posed the fathers and daughters more like boyfriend/girlfriend. The poses should have exemplified the father-daughter relationship and not mimicked some kind of semi-romantic date. So yes, in my view, all but one of the photos lo
  24. Nice post, fwee. Thanks for the chart. It is a nice and handy review of important points of logic.
