  1. I agree. The view that liberal Christians take does make for much nicer and far less judgmental and sanctimonious people.
  2. The good thing, Citsonga, is that he has not taken the kind of hateful action against you like we hear about from other members on ExC. I think you made a good decision in ignoring your Dad's prompting you to go back to church. I remember your letter very well. It was well written, well thought out, logical, clear, not harsh on your parents. My suggestion if your Dad does it again is to respond in the same way you did in your letter. I do not mean another long explanation as you did in your letter. Rather, I mean to answer from your heart. Explain how his inquiries affect you and why y
  3. I don't necessarily think that the author of the article has identified the worst passage in the Bible, but I liked his analysis. Christians turn faith into a great virtue and so one with faith is a virtuous person. In fact, for many Christians, faith is the most important element of their religion. It was, among other things, thinking about why faith should be viewed as a virtue that I began to lose faith all those years ago when I finally left Christianity behind. Faith is only a virtue when there is a lack of credible evidence to support a particular position perceived to be a truth
  4. Think calmly and rationally about what the man in the video is saying. First, he is saying that God is letting him know something that he must share with others so they (we) will have the benefit if this information. What I ask you to consider is if God had such important information to share, why wouldn't he do it in a way that would be convincing and reach a bigger audience? Why would he give that guy two weird dreams, expect him to interpret them correctly, and then expect others to believe what this guy says about his dream? Well, I can't imagine any worse way for this supposed all pow
  5. I feel sympathy for the Duggars and anyone and everyone who is sexually molested, including sympathy for the victim's family members. And, yes, this includes the Duggars. I only recently learned of another family that had an older sibling (the older sibling was still a minor) who sexually molested a younger sibling. This has devastated the family like a tornado would devastate a home occupied by a whole family when it tears through that home with its 200 mile per hour winds. Based on what I have seen and heard from this family, it is like nothing anyone could imagine. So, yes, I feel g
  6. I know you are scared and I don't blame you. But you need your loved ones on your side through this time. They may cry when you tell them, but I'll bet they will cry with you while holding onto you. It sounds to me like you have a very good family, otherwise you would not be so afraid of hurting them. You sound fortunate to have them and I'll bet they will tell you (maybe after the shock has worn down some) that they don't want to lose you to alcohol.
  7. I don't know your family, but I will tell you what will hurt them much, much more than if you told them about your drinking and asked for their support while you do what you must to beat it. That is for you not to tell them, keep drinking as you are until you are irreparably harmed. Then they will know that you never trusted that maybe they would rise to the occasion after learning of your addiction and support and help you.
  8. I will give the OP the benefit of one thing. That one thing is when you start hearing the call for one war or another by our leaders, believe very little of what they tell us are the reasons they want yo go to war. They are liars and most wars are about money, power, and control.
  9. Because everyone knows that by balancing a heavy rock on her head, proves that a woman didn't ask for it from that man who forced himself on her. Sheesh!!!!!
  10. There are so many variations on Christianity, for one to say the religion may possibly be true does not say much. Do you mean Bishop Spong's version of Christianity, Jerry Falwell's version, Catholic, Pentecostal, gnostic, and on and on the list goes?
  11. This is but one small sample of the shoddy and emotion-laden reporting that is going on with this case. "Walter James Palmer, who paid about $50,000 to hunt the lion, used bait to lure the 13-year-old black-maned big cat out of Hwange National Park in early July so he could shoot it with a bow and arrow, authorities said." http://news.yahoo.com/letter-to-patients--dentist-behind-cecil-the-lion-s-death-apologizes-165511095.html First, he did not pay $50,000 to hunt THE lion. He paid the required permit the government of Zimbabwe charges for a perfectly LEGAL hunt for one lion, n
  12. You mean, this dentist might have killed Cecil under circumstances that are OK? OF, I have no idea what your point is, but my mind reels. I always like your sense of humor, ficino. It's kind of how I like my wine - dry and with a taste that lingers a bit.
  13. It will be interesting to see what the facts really are. My general rule of thumb: the media will get it wrong. So I shall withhold any opinions until a reliable source of facts shows up.
  14. The Internet and social media certainly have changed things in a significant way, but there are some positives. Many people have broadened their social horizons. Take ExC, for example. We are a group of people from a number of different communities and countries who have leaving Christianity in common. Without the internet, many of us might still think we are all alone in having left the religion. We might have no one with a similar experience with whom we can talk about it. Instead, we can come here any time we want and have conversations and interact. Frankly, I find the whole thing q
  15. Such great news, Leo. I am so happy for all of you affected by this.
  16. Welcome to ExC, somanyquestions. Just a few thoughts. You need not label yourself anything. Atheism does not automatically follow deconversion from Christianity, though it does for some, but not for all. Our members range from atheists, agnostics, Buddhists, pagans, other spiritualists, though I believe that atheism and agnosticism are the two primary labels our members use. As many others have advised you, do not be in a hurry to write letters to your relatives or even discussing your deconversion with them. Give yourself time to get used to this great change in your life. Be war
  17. So sorry to hear of this terrible and cruel episode in your life as a child. You have received some excellent advice so far and I agree with all of them even though there are differing views on what you should do. My agreement with the wisdom of everyone who so far has offered advice and opinions just goes to show how no one can know what is the right thing to do. Since no one, and especially I, do not know what is the right thing to do, try this. Try and decide what would be most helpful for you. As you think through the various possible scenarios, do your best to place yourself there
  18. One step at a time and I do believe we will eventually find convincing evidence of extraterrestrial life, either currently living or that lived in the past. It will be an exciting day when that finally happens!!
  19. Don't get the possibility that there is some sort of being that might be thought of as a "god" confused with Christianity. Christianity is based on a specific deity which is described in the Bible in a fairly detailed way. That God is said to be the creator of the universe and yet is the inventor of hell into which he throws people for an eternity of pain and suffering for things so trivial as lusting in one's mind without actually having sex. That God is said to be kind, gentle and loving, but orders genocide that requires the killing of men, women, and children, even babies. That God is said

  21. This is an interesting question which has yet to be answered. The relatively few states that recognize common law marriages did so primarily to avoid an injustice. As a historical example, a man and woman got married, had several children, but the man was killed on the job. The wife would be entitled to workers compensation benefits, but the employer would dig deep in the records and if they found a technical flaw in the marriage license would deny benefits and the widow and family were tossed out into the streets. In some states, the courts refused to accept such a vile injustice and rule
  22. I agree with Thurisaz that this is a plausible explanation, but it seems too simplistic to me. For example, it seems odd to me that not one of the non-angry straight men registered even a sign of arousal. My understanding that there is a range of homosexuality in all people, with some having very little and others having very much. If this is true, then I would have expected at least some of the non-angry straight men to have some reaction even if not enough to say that they are gay. The whole thing seems too "black and white" and I don't think our sexuality is like that. And like Thur
  23. Sounds like you two have a great relationship! I could be wrong, but I seem to detect your dad having some fun with you with his statements about "faith". It seems like he understands your point about having faith without support for it, but he digs a little deeper to keep the dialogue going. You seem to have a super father and he seems to have a super daughter!!
