  1. So...the logical thing to do is to vote for a conservative candidate (because conservatives never force their ideas on others) who waging a pretty literal war on the press? Solid. Reducing the complexity of politics down to a false dichotomy and tossing in reductio ad absurdum for good measure. Excellent work, SilentLoner. What exactly is the false dichotomy here? Do elaborate. And mind the fallacist's fallacy, RedneckProfessor.

  3. That newspaper clipping is from a Scottish newspaper. Dunno if that's what you call the left, but I don't know why it would be hard to see that a narcissist who has surrounded himself with right wing christian fanatics might be bad news....
  4. Its a pretty weak comparison. Domesticated animals like pigs are bred for eating, and killing them for food =/= making them suffer for amusement. Tigers are wild animals and should not be used for entertainment. I was at a circus that did something similar to this and even as a kid I knew it was horrifying. No, it's not. It only goes to show that you haven't thought twice about how the food industry works. Why is the tiger worth more consideration? Because it's cute? Endangered? In principal, there's no difference as far as I can see. Actually I know a lot about the food
  5. Expect more cases like this as religious fanatics continue to make laws to close abortion clinics and defund Planned Parenthood. As it is, 96 percent of Tennessee's counties have no abortion clinic.
  6. A lot of abortions are due to failed birth control. Plus a lot of people I know in the south are desperate to leave the hellholes (their words, not mine) but can't afford to do so.

  8. It looks like Zuckerberg might be gearing up for a political run. Which makes his renouncing atheism (sadly enough) make sense. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/secularvoices/2017/01/04/the-likely-reason-zuckerberg-denounced-atheism-hint-not-daughter/
  9. My husband's grandparents started smoking in their teenage years. They both quit in their 80's for some reason. He died in his 90's and she will be 100 in March. There will always be anecdotal oddballs like that, but clearly the vast majority of lung cancer cases are with smokers, as well as bladder cancer, which my husband's father had (he has tried to quit smoking multiple times and has pretty much given up ever succeeding. Unfortunately, he did not inherit his parents' amazing resiliency). Interesting that nicotine has that effect on UC. Is it actually smoking that has that effect or ju
  10. Both my parents smoked for 40+ years and never had any ill health effects (so far) as a result. They started back in their teens when it wasn't well known how dangerous it was. Obviously that's not the norm, to come out relatively unharmed, but why would that be a fair basis to deny medical care? In my case, smoking cigarettes would arguably be a good thing. I have an immune disorder (ulcerative colitis) that can be put into remission by smoking. Not kidding, the nicotine has an effect on it. I don't smoke (tried for a bit, didn't like it and never got addicted). But if I did, to help my c
  11. I wouldn't exactly say they are having "realistic" conversations about why she lost. We may be, but the DNC are blaming everyone - hispanics, millennials, white females, ANYBODY - but the only one actually responsible, Clinton and her historically low approval rating for a presidential nominee. The only nominee with a worse rating was Trump which is why I stand by my statement that her popular vote is in part thanks to a greater fear of Trump than actually liking her. Not necessarily. I've heard a lot of blame being lobbed at the DNC, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and how Sanders was screw

  13. In the beginning the site really was more community-like. But its been in decline for a long time, and I agree with your family member's assessment of the attitudes around here. Though more about political issues - seriously, it seems unusual that we actually discuss atheism or even religion that much anymore.

  15. Heard about it when it happened. I've always said the UN was useless. This just solidifies my opinion.
  16. I would assume it was so that the mother could avoid a trial, that all can be agonizing as hell. I would hope it was something the mother agreed to though, instead of just the lawyers. That being said I agree the death penalty was merited.
  17. Gave my first ever witness statement to police the other day. I was walking down the street when a guy passing by me suddenly collapsed and cracked his head open on the sidewalk - blood started flowing like crazy. But at least it was heartening to see how many people ran out of restaurants to help the guy and call 911. Unfortunately his wallet got stolen by accident...

Yeah - what happened was he was coming out of a fast food place with a big bag full of food cartons when he collapsed. Among the onlookers was a homeless guy who kept asking people for food/money. Finally another onlooker just took the (blood spattered, mind you) bag of food and handed it to the homeless guy who then left. When paramedics got there they tried to find his wallet but couldn't. Then one of the food place workers came out and told them she had seen the man put his wallet into...

the bag of food. So that's why I said accidentally stolen.

Oh... that sucks. Poor guy. It wasn't accidentally stolen though, if someone took his food with the wallet in it.

  18. Keep in mind The Daily Mail is a tabloid. Any other sources on this?
