Goodbye Jesus

Gene Scott

What do people know about this guy? I've seen bits and pieces of his television show. Old grumpy guy ranting about this and that, then cut away to hours of horses. I Googled and found out he died and he was pretty much what I thought. He was loved by those who followed him (except those who knew him personally then he was hated as a smoking, drinking, womanizing a-hole) and hated by everyone else. He was a TBS type wanna-be.

But I'm more interested in his particular flavor of teachings. I went to his website and while it was "free" it wasn't available. You had to watch his show and then call in during certain times to get it or something and the archives weren't available. So what was this guy all about? What was his particular brand of xianity? It'd help me understand someone else if I can understand this guy because apparently he influenced them quite a lot and since when I we talk about religion it's like they're talking a foreign language to me I can only imagine that it's because they learned what they did from this guy.

So any/all information to bring me up to speed on good old Gene Scott and his doctrine would be greatly appreciated.

I could never understand the guy. Whether it's the content of his lectures or even the way he talks. And i think the board behind him with hebrew and greek text is there for decoration. He goes up to it, mummbles, and chicken scratches on it with no purpose. You cant tell what he's writing at all! Then he pats himself on the back. Im just as confused as you are.

Oh and a lot of Christians i know say they dont like him. I dont even know how they understood him in the first place

<edit>

Here's a little bio of him i just found. This guy was nuts!

some interesting things:

-he married a porn star.

-After repeatedly telling God to heal his cancer, on Friday, February 18, 2005, Dr. Scott suffered a stroke.

I remember watching him some, back in the mid-80's. He <i>is</i> a brilliant man. And he knows the Bible backward forward and in bubbles of languages. Of course, what he does with his irreverent knowledge, is tease people... He was actually funny, and if what he said hadn't been anathema, I probably would have watched him a lot more.

He was associated at the top levels of the Assemblies of God (I think)...and I further believe he was on staff at Oral Roberts University for a time.

Thanks for the links and all. I was hoping for some more doctrinal info but it seems I'll have to try to actually watch some reruns of his show <*shudder*>. The best I could do is it almost seems he believed in some form of the elect but he had a number of personal philosophies in there too it seems so I'm not too sure.

I found it interesting that his own website makes no mention, that I could find, that the guy actually died. Guess that kind of info might keep the money train from rolling on, eh?

I'll probably be interested in this for quite awhile so don't be afraid to add to this thread if you come across anything interesting (or if you actually followed this guy or something...that would be helpful too but a website that spells it all out would be perfect of course).

I remember watching this guy! I forgot all about him. He was always on late at night, sitting in a chair, smoking a big stogy, and asking everyone if we were bored! Laff. He was a hoot.

He would go off on the Pyramids, which always caught my attention. If I remember right they figured out some sorta 'rosetta stone' key type thing that unlocked the great pyramid. So every step into the pyramid was a point on earth's timeline. The entrance was slanting downward indicating our original descent to hell....and then when they found the original entrance and cut upwards to it it cooincided with the birth of jesus and that kinda stuff.

But he never got to the point where he would say 'whats coming next'. If you wanted yo know, ya had to send in the bucks.

I went looking for Gene Scott's web site some time ago when someone else posted a link to a video where an African-American guy was ranting on weird stuff. See this thread "Best Bible Thumper Ever"

You're right, his web site doesn't mention that he's dead.

I didn't watch his show and only saw clips from it when people were making fun of it. Usually the clip showed him reading something from the Bible while smoking a cigar, then cussing at the camerman.

Gene is/was a weird one. I did a quick look at his web site back in April and couldn't figure out his theology.

I remember back in the 80's when I was living with my dad out in the country in the no cable TV zone, Gene Scott's show was the only show I could watch on TV when I came home from work in the middle of the night. The fucker was nuts, but he was very entertaining at times.

After years of trying to figure him out I have just come to the conclusion he was the greatest bastard evangelist on T.V. He lived a lavishly immoral life and he did it right in front of the camera! He was a very demeaning authoritarian leader whose follower's seem to cower like beaten puppies around his chair. A person who attempted to understand his teachings was in danger of being taken by his personality. If you called in and tried to get information the operator on the phone would tell you "...just keep watching the program"
