Those of you here who used to be pentecostal/charasmatic whatever and did the speaking in tongues thing. What was going on there?

 

Given that, if you now believe there is no Holy Spirit, what was doing that babbling? Were you faking it, or in a form of hysteria?

 

If you were faking it why? Did you suspect others were faking it too?

Being an ex-Pentecostal I know all about babbling in tongues, ufortunately.

 

I was first exposed this this when I was about 12, and at that time the whole thing gave me the willies. Here I was in a church with everyone (including my parents) jumping around like idiots, the preacher is yelling, everyone is shouting, you would almost think you were in the drunk tank, not a church. I imagined it must be very similar to group therapy hour in a mental hospital. Anyway I could never do it, no matter how hard I tried. A couple of times I did fake it (very knowingly) because I realized in looking around the church that I was the only person not doing it, and I didn't want anyone to notice and give me looks. But I would sit there and think my god am I the only person in this entire church who hasn't completely lost their mind and gone off the deep end?

 

The big problem with so-called "speaking in tongues" is that we were led to believe that if you couldn't do it, you were not filled with the holy spirit, and if you weren't filled with the spirit, you were not saved. So there was an enormous pressure for people to "perform", and I have to think that led to quite a few "fakes". For the remaining people who didn't knowingly fake it, I think that pressure, combined with a highly charged atmosphere of yelling and shouting, hand clapping, jumping around, etc. brings people into this sort of "mass hysteria" state and they just start babbling.

 

OMG look I just tried it and after all these years I can finally speak in tonges: "aarirfkfk lvkibliei lkifkkiieww fjeidkd" Praise Jebus! Hallilujia!!

Well! this happend to me when i was 19. I had prayed for an hour and afterwards when i said amen, sumthing took controll of my tongue and cauzed it to go on for 3 hours that night, and the following 2 days. Well! im an exchristian today,so dont know what that was but i was definitely not in controll.

hehe speaking in tongues really is a load of nonsense isn't it? I used to do it, believing it was something that 'edified the spirit', and we always used to pray in tongues for two or three minutes at church. I'm sure the folk from church still do. Heaven knows how it all started, this speaking in tongues. Maybe it was the work of a demon, you would understand it if demons get people to do strange things like that. Oops, don't wanna call the work of the Holy Spirit the work of a demon now .. do I?

I spoke in tounges and, like the others here, I can still do it. Yes, I believed the Holy Spirit was speaking through me. I'm so embarrassed by the whole thing now.

My opinoin:

I would have to say that people who speak in tounges and the whole "full gospel" genre of Christianity tend to have emotional problems and are not knowledgeable in healthy ways of dealing with their issues. The emotionalism of the services, tend to elicit people to react primitively, kind of like tribal rituals. They can release their emotions, cry, yell, shake, babble, run around, and receive the support from others, they normally don't receive. What they consider "the spirit of god" are simply the endorphins kicking in. Yes, it can feel like god or something outside of yourself has "possessed" you, but all that is happening is 1. A chemical reaction in your brain 2. Your subconcious mind dealing with issues that your concious mind hasn't processed.

This girl at college once explained to me that speaking in tongues was like saying a special prayer that the Devil could not hear. . I think it's just hysteria personally.

I can't say I've ever "spoken in tongues," but I've heard my dad do it.

I asked him if he had any "spiritual gifts", and he said "I can speak in tongues." And then he told me about how when he was a new Christian convert, he had a few of fellow men churchgoers telling him that he could speak in tongues. They told him to "just try it" and he said this:

Well the church that I grew up in was Pentecostal as well, but we were more conservative or luke warm or whatever you want to say...Speaking in tongues rarely happened in church services..the occasional word and interpetaion happened but not very often as it wasn't scheduled in to the program of the service on the bulliten...

 

BUT at the camps in the summer time this was a big deal.. usually on friday after a week of being brainwashed they would have holyspirt days where you would be pressured to accept the holy spirrt and speak in tongues. For years I tried thinking something was holding me back...my mother would speak in tongues and I heard others at prayer meeting too. We were taught that it is a langague in which we can communicte with to god that the devil cannot understand. As well as a more divine way in which your spirt prays to the trinity. Also a spirtiual gift and a sign to others that you are a true believer.

 

I did eventually go to a women retreat years ago... where again we prayed for the holyspirt to come and to speak in tongues.. The speaker there would sing in tongues and one girl I knew from my prayer group also could sign in tongues.. I remember wanting to be able to sing in tongues and eventually that night was able to. In the following months I tried to sing in tongues again but I never could really.... I tried to force it and then I think it was mostly me... (I did speak in tongues one time when I was in a car accident four years ago... started speaking in tongues in the middle of the road...was pretty embarressed afterwards. Luckily I was with my friend who was also pentecostal but did not speak in tongues.... I did call out to Jesus as we were spinning around in the car though).

 

This is what i think now... people are pressured by peers and emoitons into speaking in tongues they make it happen and somehow there brain takes over and they truly expeience speaking in tongues and are not faking it.... others cannot have it happen and feel like there peers will view them as unworthy so they fake it. I have read the study on brainlobes of people studied while speaking in tongues. It is interessting, there is something going on in the brain that is perhaps a learned behaviour. But a lot of people do fake it and act it up for attention... some are truly genunie and it can be hard to tell the difference.

"Speaking in tongues," or glossolalia--an intense, trancelike state where the speaker is ostensibly in direct connection with God--has been around for thousands of years.

 

Now psychiatrist Andrew Newberg and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia say they have captured glossolalia on brain scans. They recruited 5 black women from a local Pentecostal congregation, where speaking in tongues is common, and asked them to sing gospel songs and to speak in tongues. During each activity, the women were injected with a radioactive tracer that provided brain-scanning equipment with a snapshot, in effect, of which areas were most active as indicated by blood flow.

 

The scientists report in the November issue of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging that compared to when the women were singing, frontal lobe function decreased during glossolalia. "The part of the brain that normally makes them feel in control has been essentially shut down," explains Newberg. And there was increased activity in the brain's parietal region, which he says "takes sensory information and tries to create a sense of self and how you relate to the rest of the world." Both of these shifts are the opposite of what happens to the brain in a meditative state, he says.

 

Psychologist Michael Persinger of Laurentian University in Ontario, who has done brainwave research with glossolalia, agrees that increased parietal activity "would be associated with … an enhancement of 'touching' sensations over the entire body--i.e., being touched by the 'spirit.'"

When I was in a penetacostal church I wanted to speak in tounges, so I went told the preacher.

He put his hands on me, and prayed.....prayed some more....prayed some more....finally he said it'll come to you.

 

A church bus driver said just say shundie over and over and you'll create more words.

 

I really got into it blabbering, rolling on the floor and running around the church room. I copy cated then just got into it.

 

It's all just copy cating then getting into it, and feeling the adrenaline. I'v experianced the same thing at dance clubs. Ever seen someone dancing, and started doing it yourself?

 

Same thing there's no holy spook doing it. Just copycating, getting creative, and feeling adrenaline.

 

Also "shundie" is Sundie "what we call sunday in my town" with an H in it, and making it sound like Shun- die. This is no special language just rewording it to make it look like it.

I spoke in tongues back in my fundie days. I think it's a learned behavior and emotionalism. I spent all night in a prayer chapel back in 1985 praying to receive the baptism of the spirit. I didn't speak in tongues that night though I thought I felt the presence of god very strongly, but I did later on when a friend of mine prayed over me. I uttered some ecstatic gibberish and my friend said, "You got it! Glory!" Well, okay, he didn't say "Glory!" I could still speak in tongues if I wanted to, but I never do so, unless I am mocking the practice, as I did in the attached file. Glory!

I spoke in tongues, too. I remember the first experience quite well. I was gripped by intense emotionalism and then my speech just got going of itself. I could stand back with another part of my mind and listen to it. I think it's activation of the language centers of the brain. It's so widespread in the world that I don't see any reason to think that it's anything other than a little-understood psychological phenomenon. Stories of people speaking known languages are never eyewitness accounts; invariably, it's third-hand or fourth-hand. I never met anyone who understood what the tongue speaker was saying.

This Is Usually The Part Of The Sermon When ( After Everyone Has Gotten ''Good And Riled Up ) The Music Is Playing . Everyone Is Clapping , And The Preacher Has Worked Up A Good Sweat. Then The Members Are Called On To '' Receive The Spirit '' . I spoke in tongues back in my fundie days. I think it's a learned behavior and emotionalism. I spent all night in a prayer chapel back in 1985 praying to receive the baptism of the spirit. I didn't speak in tongues that night though I thought I felt the presence of god very strongly, but I did later on when a friend of mine prayed over me. I uttered some ecstatic gibberish and my friend said, "You got it! Glory!" Well, okay, he didn't say "Glory!"
