StewartP
In the late 1950's the Zambezi river in Africa was dammed, creating the largest man-made lake in the world - Lake Kariba. As the waters rose, islands were created from hilltops, stranding thousands of wild animal and eventually over-running them. Facing mass destruction of the wildlife of the Zambezi Valley, the Rhodesian Game Department carried out a massive animal rescue and relocation program for several years. It was Operation Noah. As the newsreel in this clip states: HeavyWeights "Noah had only 2 of each species to collect, and they came willingly without persuasion" "In the greatest flood since then animals had to be forcibly rescued by their thousands" It's a fascinating story of wildlife management from a forgotten time & place.
