Amethyst
Why is it whenever a tragedy happens, the news media plays up the faith angle? Why is it you never see "using family, friends to cope" or "using your own inner strength to cope" or "using journal writing to cope" articles? I mean, they make it seem like religion is the only acceptable way to deal with tragedy. There are other ways. Not everyone uses the crutch of religion. Garnet
Because the media sells products. And the majority of people in the good 'ol US of A are what again? Oh yeah, Christians.
Ouroboros
Because religion has to be reinforced, it needs fuel, to survive. If people started to see they can cope with other techniques, religion would wane off. It's a survival mechanism of the meme virus. People should start thanking God for the people that die in a plane crash, after all is it not part of Gawd's overall goody-goody plan?
Garnet
By the way, despite my flippant post earlier, playing up the faith angle really pisses me off sometimes. Case in point. I'm an NHRA (drag racing) fan. Last year, a top fuel driver (for those who watch, Cory Mac) was in a horrendus looking crash. The car was totally destroyed and the driver basically walked away without a scratch. Fast forward to an interview with Paula Zahn on CNN. The focus of the interview was how "lucky" the driver was and how thankful he was to God that he wasn't hurt. WHAT?????? The safety innovations in the car and the safety crew that extracted the driver didn't have anything to do with it, I suppose. No, no, no..it was all Gawd. That stuff just makes my head want to explode.
Amethyst
That stuff just makes my head want to explode. Me too. Seems like the media has a very pro-religion bias these days. This was what set me off: Family Uses Faith To Cope With Marine's Death It just seems to me like every time something happens, this kind of stuff gets hyped up. I wish it wasn't.
