Pilots spot 'UFOs' near the Channel Islands

From Wikinews

April 26, 2007

Two airline pilots said they witnessed UFOs off the coast of Alderney on Monday.

Aurigny's Captain Ray Bowyer, 50, said that during his flight from Southampton, England, at 3 p.m., he saw a bright-yellow light 10 miles west of Alderney in England. His craft at the time was 30 miles away from the island and had an elevation of 4,000ft.

... 20px-Cquote1.png It was a very sharp, thin yellow object with a green area. It was 2,000ft up and stationary, I thought it was about 10 miles away, although I later realised it was approximately 40 miles from us. At first, I thought it was the size of a 737. But it must have been much bigger because of how far away it was. It could have been as much as a mile wide. ... 20px-Cquote2.png

As Bowyer approached Alderney, he noticed another object identical to the first one.

... 20px-Cquote1.png It was exactly the same but looked smaller because it was further away. It was closer to Guernsey. I can't explain it. At first, I thought it might have been a reflection from a vinery in Guernsey, but that would have disappeared quickly. This was clearly visual for about nine minutes. As I got closer to it, it became clear to me that it was tangible. I was in two minds about going towards it to have a closer look but decided against it because of the size of it. I had to think of the safety of the passengers first. I'm certainly not saying that it was something of another world. All I'm saying is that I have never seen anything like it before in all my years of flying. ... 20px-Cquote2.png

Bowyer, who has been flying commercial aircrafts for about 20 years, said that he did file a report on the incident and did contact air traffic controllers during the incident.

Paul Kelly, 31, who was the Jersey Airport air traffic controller on duty during the incident, said that the airport received simultaneous reports from the Aurigny and Blue Island pilot and that the Blue Island pilot had reported a UFO approximately 1,500ft underneath his plane. Kelly noted that the airport was unable to detect the object on their radar.

... 20px-Cquote1.png The pilot from Blue Islands was en route to Jersey at the same time and as he went past Sark he described an object behind him to his left. The description was very similar to Captain Bowyer's and they described it as being in exactly the same place. But they were looking at it from opposite sides. The Blue Islands plane was at 3,500ft at the time so, again, both pilots placed it at the same altitude. If the object was stationary, our equipment would not have picked it up because the radar would have screened it out. ... 20px-Cquote2.png

John Spencer, deputy chairman of the British UFO Research Association, said: "These types of sightings have been reported by pilots - generally accepted to be reliable and sensible observers - since the 1940s and they have excited attention to this day. Such light effects are often popularly thought to represent alien visitors but many UFO researchers believe they more likely represent natural, atmospheric, phenomena not yet fully understood by science. However, a similar encounter in 1978 over the Bass Straits in Australia, where the pilot was in radio contact with the ground throughout, resulted in the pilot never being heard from again, so these phenomena are important to study."

Nick Pope, who previously worked for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence, said: "While no witnesses are infallible, pilots are trained observers and less likely than most people to misidentify something mundane. The MoD's UFO case files contain several reports from civil and military pilots, some of which were correlated by radar. This is the sort of sighting that is taken seriously and should be investigated thoroughly. While most UFOs can be explained as misidentifications of aircraft, weather balloons, satellites and suchlike, a small percentage are more difficult to explain. This is one of the most intriguing sightings I've heard about in recent years."

The current spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defence said that they would not be investigating this incident.

I've read so many of these stories that I just don't give a shit about them anymore.

If those little green fuckers are going to make themselves known, then by all means, they need to do so and stop it with all of this "sightings" bullshit.

Come out, come out wherever you are, you little green fuckers! :vent:

 Why don't UFO's ever hover over cities or where their are large groups of people? It's always just one or two people who seem to witness such things. Not only that but IMO, when there are UFO's sighted... I'm sure it's more likely some military experiment then it is beings from outer space.

Nope? I suppose I can do a goggle and educate myself on them, but I hadn't, do you have any good resources?

IF they didn't we couldn't have had the Bill Hicks 'Flying Saucer' tour.... appearing randomly in front of a handful of rednecks who don't understand shit...

Well, I have to admit to being highly skeptical of any UFO claims. The first aliens we're likely to find will probably be microscopic critters or plants. I've read about the Pheonix Lights, btw, and lots of other claims. Have seen no evidence other than that a bunch of people think they were real. Kind of similar to Christianity, don't you think?

try that, not sure how accurate it is since i haven't read it lol. i saw a show about them on the discovery channel awhile back. apparently 100s of people saw lights and large flying craft in the sky at the same time.

Thanks. :)

I thought at first the phoenix lights were going to be much like the Northern lights... Show's ya what I know lol

I'm skeptical when it comes to lights and so forth. It could be the Thunder birds flying in formation, it could be a new air craft. I mean before the B2 bomber (Stealth) was released publicly I'm sure people thought they were UFO's from outer space during its testing stages. No plane like that had ever been known to exist. I know it said a mile across and so forth which is why I think it was jets flying in formation. Anyways... Yes It is highly probable life exists outside this planet, I just don't think they would come all the way here and float around in the dead of night where there are known military projects going on.

lol, your the one who asked why they never fly over major cities. yet when people see them over cities they get dismissed out of hand.

no i don't :)

nor do i believe that it was aliens for certain, what i think is things of this nature should be looked at and investigated without dismissing it out of hand. however everything that i've seen about it is fairly convincing.

It's like religion. Any such claims need proof.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a science fiction fan. I love Star Trek, Star Wars, and Babylon 5. But I know the difference between reality and fantasy.

So do I. I've just learned the hard way not to automatically believe everything people say. :)

For kicks and giggles, how do we know we're not already pets a.k.a an ant farm?

Heard of them? Hell, I saw them...from my front yard in Phoenix. My husband's comment when he saw them, "Who the fuck's dropping flares?" UFO didn't even come up in our conversations or conversations with our neighbors. UFO did not cross my mind at the time. Only later, when the media played it up. I didn't buy it though. They looked like flares to me.

Good question Amethyst. I guess we don't know. They could already be exerting very subtle control over us. How would we know?

I wonder why ET stopped coming billions of miles to make fancy designs in our crops and then leave? Don't they like us anymore?

Crop circles? I thought that those responsible had already come forward. We know they are human artifacts, right?

 I concede that point, you're right. I will admit that maybe I'm a little closed minded when it comes to UFO's. Maybe it's how it's played up? How can things like this be investigated? I mean other then a few still photos or perhaps an unclear video that's miles away. I don't live far from the Famed Betty and Barney hill abduction. Frankly, I don't believe it but it's great for ghost telling when your in the Notch and around Indian Head. I'll try to be less closed minded about the topic, I'm willing to learn.. :)

I wouldn't say "we" know that.... some still actually believe it was ET. How or why they believe that is beyond me.
