aspirin99 Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 When I was a fundamentalist Christian, I remember when I stopped believing in hell. I think it opened the door for me to question other ideas I was told had to be true. With that in mind, I made this video. It's my first post on Youtube or this sort. In constructive criticisms or comments are welcome.
aspirin99 Posted July 1, 2007 Author Posted July 1, 2007 My wife just watched it and said I probably lost my audience when I used profanity. What do you think about that?
Antlerman Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 That was FANTASTIC!! Nice job!! No, I thought the whole graphic at the opening that mirrored the words, "Scared the shit out of me" was a great attention grabber. It expresses in frank, matter of fact, down-to-earth way what people really say, and the shock element of it presented in that way was more a humorous anecdote that drives a real point that most feel but are afraid to say. I actually like the WTF graphic too. I laughed my ass off!!! It was great. Would this put someone off? Well, I'm not sure. I think it's presented in a way for an effect. If you were trying to reach an older, more "sensitive" audience, the entire thing would need to be restyled. So, I don't think that type of humor in it really inappropriate. I mean the whole thing is caustic with the precious little winged bears and all. I don't know, I might be wrong, but I couldn't help but like it so much I can't be objective about it. One "error" if it really matters, is the text at one point says, "Serve God or be tortured forever", yet you say, "Tormented". It's easier to change the text, if you want to be a perfectionist. Edit: BTW, the next time I see that little dog again, I'm going to run for my f*ing life! Dear God!!! I loved the heroin needle in his mouth and the glowing red eyes!
Piprus Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 I just watched your vid, aspirin, and it was great! It addresses one of the basic questions I had about xianity so long ago as a teenager, and one of many reasons why I could no longer believe. Hopefully it will help some others think their way out of the borg. The only comment I would offer is in regard to the 4-letter words. From a wavering xian's perspective, that may be enough to make them hit the "X". (But then again, maybe I'm just old fashioned).
Vigile Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 Would this put someone off? Well, I'm not sure. I think it's presented in a way for an effect. The points you make in the video are more off putting to a fundy than the use of the word fuck. Very professional video. You have a lot of talent. Your voice over was great.
Lightbearer Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 I liked it. It had the style of one of those Christians videos... You have these pictures of church and questions about God with a gentle voice-over (no offense) talking about the usually hell and damnation but instead of praising God you say "This scared the shit out of me!" I was blind-sided by the awesomeness there.
aspirin99 Posted July 2, 2007 Author Posted July 2, 2007 Thanks all. Do you think this is something the webmaster might post in the main blog? How do you submit things there?
Brother Jeff Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 What a glorious video! Glory! I just posted it to my glorious site.
TheMathGuy Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 My wife just watched it and said I probably lost my audience when I used profanity. What do you think about that? Naw! If people are browsing the internet many of them have toughened up to that sort of thing, especially if they frequently browse YouTube. Are you familiar with TheAmazingAtheist? He uses plenty of profanity and lots of people still watch him. I think his subscriber list is somewhere in the thousands. -- Nate
aspirin99 Posted July 3, 2007 Author Posted July 3, 2007 Bro. Jeff, Thanks, and I'll check out your site. Seems I've been there in the past. Good point, MathGuy
Barnacle Bill Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 A very well made video, aspirin99! My thoughts pretty much coincide with those in Piprus' reply. Making a slight modification to a quote that is attributed to Abraham Lincoln, I would remind you, in reference to some of your...ummm...blue verbiage, that "You can fool please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool please all the people all the time". Thanks for sharing your excellent work!
xandermac Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I thought it was fuckin awesome! I'm an old lady, I can say fuck if I want too. I have xtian friends that will watch movies that say every foul word there is but not when it's mixed with god. I used to be the same way, I'm just now beginning to enjoy southpark. The freewill thing is something that I've always had trouble with even as a child. Get ready for some godly answers. They should be funny to watch!
willybilly30 Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I get into the freewill argument allot with christians for some reason they don't get the point. It's not freewill but a threat. Why is that guy standing upside down in a hole in that video? That was weird lol
xandermac Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 What a coincidence, I just saw your video on stumbleupon.
aspirin99 Posted July 5, 2007 Author Posted July 5, 2007 What a coincidence, I just saw your video on stumbleupon. Stumbleupon, cool. Which video site did it take you to? I put it on MetaCafe, and it was moved to Digg - and the Christians came out of the woodwork trying to explain why I was wrong. So far, none of the responses have been of even a slight challenge. Although, they are killing me by rating the video low stars and thumbs downing the DIgg posts. http://digg.com/videos/people/Is_There_Fre...on_Of_Free_Will

But I'll try to get on it and vote as much as I can.
