♦ nivek ♦
Pope Benedict's mistakeBoston Globe by James Carroll "When the likes of Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, or Christopher Hitchens, citing insights of science or the rise of sectarian violence, denounce the very idea of God, fundamentalists strike back by attacking pillars on which such modern criticism stands. In this mode, Pope Benedict XVI last week issued two unexpected decrees, restoring the atavistic Mass of the Council of Trent and resuscitating an outmoded Catholic exclusivism -- the notion of a pope-centered Catholicism as the only authentic way to God. In these reactionary initiatives, Pope Benedict inadvertently shows that he shares a basic conviction with Dawkins et al. -- that religion is a primitive impulse, unable to withstand the challenge of contemporary thought." Fweethawt
If those guys are causing that kind of stir, I think I should start to pay a bit more attention to them. I didn't have any idea that they had the pope shakin' in his shoes.
Lycorth
Good for them The senile old bitch known as Holy Mother Church may be feisty in her last days, but she'll be in the grave soon. No amount of foot-stamping and self-righteous carping by any Pope will change that

I didn't have any idea that they had the pope shakin' in his shoes. I doubt they had any effect at all even if they where on the Pope's radar - these acts are entirely in keeping with the political and theological views he has been writting and talking about for the last twenty years... he'll suffle off along with his conservative and "traditonalist" cronies in the next decade or so thankfully. Grandpa Harley
I subscribe to the idea that Benny the P is living proof that Father Ted showed the three stages of the Church 1) Young and stupid (Dougal) 2) Middle aged and failed (Ted) 3) Old and a steaming drunk (Jack) all tended by a passive aggressive fruit loops (Mrs Doyle) and as isolated as all get out from reality (Craggy Island)
