garrisonjj
I see many exprotestants and various ex bible bangers here, but how many of you were Catholics? My deconversion, while firm, is still riddled with that old catholic guilt. Confession for me was the worst. Being truly sorry for your sins (How do you do that?) Telling them to the priest, but your really talking to god, and the whole " hell is real" thing still bugs me. Nevertheless, the church never emphasized the bible as they must realize that reading it would quickly deconvert many. Thats why its necessary for me to ocassionally say to myself "fuck all religion!" My life is better without it.
LithaB
Hi Garrison, I was Catholic. I've had time to decompress, but I can definitely relate to the guilt thing. I used to agonize over trying to figure out what was the "right" thing to do in any difficult situation. This often left me indecisive, and I would make foolish choices based upon what seemed to be god's will. Now when I make decisions I ask myself, "what makes sense?" Oddly enough, the sensible solution generally turns out to be the most "moral" as well. The more often that happens, the less guilt I feel over avoiding the old spiritual gymnastics since they never really worked anyway. I seldom came to a decision that made sense, and therefore my actions often created more problems
Robbobrob
Although I was never Catholic, it was the church I went to the most growing up. My mother's family is all Catholics (though most are holiday and special occasion Catholics), and although my mom had converted to Episcopalian to marry my dad, she has in recent years (several years after they divorced) converted back to Catholism. I see how my family reacts to things, usually a cook outs and the like. I don't often like how they treat family members who dare to dress or act differently. I know that there were some shaking of heads when I married a Jewish woman (and probably some sighs of relief when we divorced a few years later). After being on this board a while, and seeing how downright awful Protestant Christians can be, I am actually thankful my family was Catholic, and did not let that get in the way of being a close and loving family. Unknowing1
I too was a catholic. I denounced the catholic religion when I was 13, didn't identify with any religious denomination for numerous years and then joined and attended a Methodist church for 1 1/2 years before reality finally set in 3 years ago.
