Need Input On A Manga Idea.

I'm thinking of entering Tokyopop's Rising Stars of Manga competition, I'd like to get everyone's opinion on a story idea I have. As most of you know, a guy being turned into a girl is one of the staple ideas in anime/manga(Ranma 1/2 being most famous). As far as I know, no one's done a story where a girl starts changing into a guy.

 

I've got a rough idea for a story ,where a girl named Miyuki starts spontaneously changing into a man. However, for extra shock value, she doesn't turn into a bishonen(prettyboy), but transforms into a big square jawed muscular type like Gatts from Berserk or Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star.

 

And when she transforms, it's not all at once but similar to the body reshaping one would see in a werewolf transformation. (Think David Naughton when he turns into the wolf the first time in American Werewolf in London.) In her case, her hands would swell and grow larger and rougher, her chest and shoulders would broaden and flatten, her hips would grow narrow, she'd grow taller etc etc. Any ideas on where to go with this would be greatly appreciated.

I can see a lot of avenues here...what kind of comic do you want to bend for? Action? Romance? Comedy? Drama? You could do quite a bit for it.

 

The usual bent to something like this would definately be gender-switcher explores what it means to be the opposite gender, and dealing with romance as the opposite gender. Meaning Miyuki in her guy form would become the object of a crush for another girl...

 

Or if you want to get really creative, a gay man.

 

Then in the meantime she would probably try to figure out WHY she's suddenly switching genders and how to stop it...then sometimes towards the end deciding whether or not she really wants to.

Is this like in the incredible hulk where it's an anger reaction? If so you could do a gang rape scene where she transforms and smashes here attackers.

Certainly be interesting, though I don't know how well received. Androgyny pretty heavily permeates anime (and I assume manga as well, though I don't read any manga), I'm sure if it was a desired concept it would be done by now (I expect it has by someone, just didn't do well enough to become a mainstream concept like bishonen).

 

Anyway, as for girls that are like boys, I think there are a few, I know sailor uranus from sailor moon is somewhat famous for it.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Kurai: The initial idea does tend to lend itself to comedy, and might especially lend itself to romantic comedy. Some good suggestions there.(You've mentioned a girl or a gay man getting a crush on her, I've also considered that it might be interesting if Miyuki was a lesbian or there was a girl who had a crush on female Miyuki.)

Well Huai, I've also thought of something similar to this. One of the things that drives me absolutely nuts is where some girl in a shoujo anime or manga dates or is in love with a guy who treats like shit.

One of the worst cases of this was in a manga where a high school girl starts dating a guy who ordered her gang raped by some of his underlings.(She narrowly escapes but dates him despite knowing it was him who gave the order.)

 

In regard to an action idea, I'm thinking it might be interesting to borrow from the Ghost Rider concept, and Miyuki has become the spirit of vengance, and when a girl is about to be raped, or otherwise abused, she transforms into a hyper masculine male,(not Hulk like) and starts punishing these assholes.(I'm fond of this concept because I despise all these Bishounen/pretty boy assholes in shoujo manga.)

Mystery/Suspense: Miyuki had a rare disease that required some sort of organ transplant. A suitable donor was found in a murdered professional athlete (possibly underground fights). With his dying breath he swore to find those responsible for his death. The first transformation is triggered when Miyuki is confronted by a similar situation (number of attackers, location). The closer Miyuki gets to the truth the more frequent the transformations.

 

Just a thought that popped in my head.
