Trying Something Different...

Wish me luck today! I am going to attempt to launch an Ex-Xian support group in my city! I have no clue if it will work, maybe it's a completely stupid idea, but I'm going to try anyway.

I have posters printed that I am going to post in public locations - I don't doubt that some Xians will tear them down.

I have a website launched in a temporary space at the moment:

Exian - Ex-Christian Support Group

So, I'll see what happens and I'll let everyone know...

Good luck! Are there any groups like it in your area? The CFI office here in Indy has a pretty regular support group. Maybe you could tap into other groups and offer to give it that way.

Good luck.

Tilting at windmills is never recognised for a noble act at the time....

Remember, you have resources here too...

Nice site - I love the Flash animations.

Do you have a plan to deal with the inevitable fundie crowd that's going to show up to try to bring people back into the fold?

Thanks everyone.

I've checked some sources for local groups, but definitely haven't done a thorough search yet.

Yes, I did the website myself. I was going to make it all Flash, but I'm still too new to Action Script...all I needed was a Stop command for what I did put together. I was actually able to put this one together really quickly so it's not perfect, but works well.

As for dealing with the fundie crowd...well...I have no specific plans at the moment. Any e-mails I get from fundies will be posted on the site and if they show up at meetings, I don't know, I guess I'll have to figure that out as I go.

I'm not expecting any quick responses, but I guess anything is possible.

If you don't feel like messing with ActionScript, SwishMax does a lot of that for you, and is a hell of a lot easier to learn than Flash. I'm hoping to get my mitts on a copy of F4L, which seems to have some of the same qualities as Swish, but is designed for teh penguinz luvrz.

I seem to recall SEO being a lot harder on flash sites though - spiders have nowhere to crawl.

SUCCESS!

Well...partially. I have been contacted through my site by a...hmmm...skeptical, secular humanist is the best terminology for it. She is not an ex-xian, but she has been wanting to start a skeptics/humanist discussion group in town, plus she is part of a Unitarian group in town so I now at least have a contact for meeting like-minded individuals in my area.

The group has begun! Red Deer's first local skeptics' group! First meeting will probably be later this month after Twyla and I get together to hash out the details...my pet project will be seeking out ex-Christians and encouraging them to join. Already found one! We have six people in total (including Twyla and myself). Almost ready to get together!

I had som difficulti reading the Texts on your Webside due to a lack of contrast. But nice work so far.

Go on! :Medal:

The site will be overhauled to match the skeptics theme in a month or so and moved to a proper host and domain. Once we're done with the details I can start working on it.

I'm reading your ex-timony on your skeptic site right now. You will pardon me, I hope, for laughing at your initial assertion that hormone treatment cured you of your religious faith. :) It just struck me as funny.

Very interesting story!

*BUMP*

Had my first, official Central Alberta Skeptics meet 'n greet last night at my favorite bar. It was fantastic. Much of the conversation circled around religion and I got to share my story a number of times and was able to relate to a few people who were also ex-xians of a sort (though not as heavily involved as I used to be).

About 15 people showed up. Most of them drove 1.5-2 hrs to get to Red Deer...I miss them all already!

Still, it worked. If you need a support group, find a co-conspirator and start one.

Congrats on your group. You might look for organizations that your group can become a chapter of to get more exposure (or at least to get a link...)
