Baseball And Politics? There Ought To Be A Law..

I'm sorry, as many of you know I'm a huge sox fan, I was reading my local news website today and was outraged that there seems to be no limits for these people to raise a buck. I know people who would give nearly anything at all to see the Red Sox play in Fenway regular season, forget post season playoffs. The oldest and smallest baseball park in the US, in addition to one of the most expensive to see a game even during regular season. Every game is sold out. Going to places like stubhub a post season play off ticket can cost as much as 20,000 each. Source Boston.com

Personally I love Fenway and only got to go once this year, which was an amazing comeback game. Anyway.. Dodd who's running for President needs assistance in raising money. So he hatches apparently this plan.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Want to see the Boston Red Sox play the Cleveland Indians for the American League Championship Series?

You just might get a chance if you donate $20.04 to Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd's Democratic presidential campaign. The amount was set because 2004 is when the Red Sox last won the World Series. Supporters can also enter by recruiting 24 friends to sign up at www.ChrisDodd.com.

Dodd is a lifelong Red Sox fan who said he'll raffle off two playoff tickets next Thursday to see Game 6 at Fenway Park. The only catch is that you have to sit with him for the game.

If Game 6 isn't necessary, the winner will get to go to Game 2 of the World Series instead. And if the Red Sox get eliminated before Game 6 of the championship series, the winner gets free airfare to go to Iowa or New Hampshire and watch Dodd campaign.

Am I the only one outraged by this? :vent: Are people running for office allowed to make money not off their message but off of what I see as bribes? Of course the risk of the booby prize if the Sox don't make it to the world series is a joke and a half. I know many of you are most likely not into sports, It is a relaxation for me and something my family and I love and are passionate about. Say it's not baseball tickets, say it's something you'd love to see or be a part of. Anything from back stage access/front row rock concert tickets, to tickets to the Oscars, to anything that would be out of reach for main stream America. Should people running for office be able to use something so extraordinary a means to raise funds? I view it as unethical.. I'm I overreacting? Thoughts?

No, I wouldn't say you're overreacting at all. He'll be getting financial backing from sources who couldn't care less about his campaign platform, and that's just unethical. I would've thought that would not be permitted under campaign finance regulations, but I guess not.

Other than that, this is the first I've heard the Indians were in the championship. Go Tribe!

Exactly! If this is the way things are going to be, they can start having all sorts of carrots and rarity's for the cost of a small 'donation'. It's outrageous. Where will it end... Free Health care for life if you pay XYZ for this raffle? Win a House .. the list won't ever end. The carrots will become bigger and then it will be literally who can buy the most support.

I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling that way.

On a personal Baseball Note: It will be hard to watch DirtDawg... (Trot Nixon) play against us, He's very loved by RSN (Red Sox Nation) I was very upset when he was traded, he's an awesome player! I was cheering for the tribe against the YankMes. It was a pretty incredible game and a glorious win to take from them in YankMe Stadium.

Good luck (but not to much :HaHa: ) on Friday and in the series !!!..

Well well... politicians have been buying both votes and generic support for a long time now, but they haven't always been that open about it.

I almost feel like commending that one on being so visible about it all. At least there's no smokescreen this time.

Politics is becoming more and more like the entertainment industry every day.

As for the baseball stuff, you're talking way over my head. I haven't followed the Tribe since their heyday in the mid-90's when Belle, Alomar, Vizquel and Lofton were in their lineup. Damn I wish I could've seen them beat the Yankees. That woulda been sooooo sweet.
