R. S. Martin Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 How come the "I need help" thread is advertized on the front page if we can't post to it? I guess I need help understanding.... Let me clarify. I understand why it's closed. I don't understand why it's advertized. I was of the opinion that threads are advertized to attract posters...I guess I'm missing something basic here....
Dhampir Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Well, at first, I couldn't understand why you were confused. But when you explained yourself... Now I'm confused about it
R. S. Martin Posted October 17, 2007 Author Posted October 17, 2007 Funny things happening. The "I need help" thread is no longer advertized. This one is. I guess someone is having fun somewhere.
white_raven23 Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 The stuff "advertized" on the front page indicates threads with the most recent posts. It's not actually an ad. Just indicating which thread in a given forum has the most recent activity.
R. S. Martin Posted October 17, 2007 Author Posted October 17, 2007 White Raven, I think you're not getting what I'm talking about. It's definitely not what you're talking about. Go to the main Index page. In a bar above where the topics start that show the most recent posts you will see this: Welcome back; your last visit was: Today, 02:58 PM Ex-Christian.Net Forums latest news: Huh? This is what I'm talking about. At this precise moment, this thread is advertized there. Maybe next time I look it will be another. Someone with authority and tools to get into places can change that when they like, I think.

Someone with authority and tools to get into places can change that when they like, I think. I *think* what happens is that it is a "displayer script" a forum "plugin" that takes the very last post, like what you see at the top of the list under "View New Posts". It takes the very latest post and makes a headline out of it. It is all automated, nobody actually chose or picked out the topic, it is there because it was the very latest thread responded to.

What's actually happening is that the Lord knows what we want to read before we read it, so He arranges for the board to advertise the topic that will interest us most! Thank you, Jesus! Glory! It's like when I just saws the "Huh?" topic, and clicked on it. God knew that I would find it interesting, so He arranged for me to see it. Hallelujah!
Robbobrob Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Oh Brother Jeff, you are obviously confused. It was not Jesus, it was Satan who controls the advertizing on this site, and he wished to confuse us more. I am getting so confused, in fact, that I am thinking it might have been that mischieveous Confucius (confuse-us) who is behind it all. Oh the Illuminati are everywhere. The Flying Speghetti Monster must have taken extra sips of the beer volcano this morning. RAmen.

Next time you make a post check to see if it's there. Won't be. Doesn't work that way. I know from off-line convo with Skip long time ago that mods operate that. Or he does. I'm not sure who has which tools.

I'm not sure who has which tools. Welll, you may be right, or the script is keyed to only one particular forum. I only say this because I have several forums and there are plugins that do exactly what I describe above. If it's manual, then I can definitely understand your confusion.
SWIM Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Looks to be a script like I first said. I just posted in "Playing in the Cesspool" and lo and behold it was in the news. I think it is keyed to the Lion's Den. If they told you they do it manual this can ALSO be true since most such scripts allow you to override the settings when you so choose. Test it, post something in the Lion's Den other then this thread, then go back and look.

SWIM Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Didn't work this time. The discovery channel thread is brand new, its taking the spot. Age of the original post I think is a factor, newer the better it seems.
Robbobrob Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 We only want what is fresh and hot at the moment...content does not matter, just the next big thing. Oh yeah, that's right, come on

Admin webmdave Posted October 18, 2007 Admin Posted October 18, 2007 This guy had the right answer: I *think* what happens is that it is a "displayer script" a forum "plugin" that takes the very last post, like what you see at the top of the list under "View New Posts". Robbobrob Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Well, sure we COULD HAVE pm'ed you....But then where would that really get us? Real answers to real questions. Ick. I still say it was Satan. He can be such a scamp sometimes.

It's more fun to bat a meaningless topic around like a kitten with a cigarette pack celophane... hehe Thanks for the clarity.
Robbobrob Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I can hear Skip now..... WASTING THE BOSS'S BANDWIDTH PEOPLE I crack me up.
