RIPw4 Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Clarksdale PressRegister article I posted a comment about how Gubernational candidate Arthur Eaves' plan to have Christian classes in public school was a terrible idea. See the TERRIBLE comments the christians left about me. I am Mr. Woodward. It really hurts my feelings but hey..thats their way... They stated that " he thinks the Muslim religion is fine and should be allowed, knowing for a fact that they hate Christians". Never even brought that up. He pulled that one out of thin air. Any comments..I live in a small town and everyone knows everyone. My mother called me today and told me that she was embarassed of my beliefs..I feel pretty hurt by all of this. It doesnt pay to stand up against the machine sometimes.
R. S. Martin Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Sounds like you're in a bad situation. Do I ever feel for you! Some people have no scruples making stuff up if that helps their agenda. Just read up on the Buddy Ferris debate to see how easily he does that. The fundies are determined to win, by foul means or fair. Not that any of this will take away your pain. But you can count on it, I think, that if ever the fundies find themselves in the minority their tune will change. Suddenly the minority will have rights, too. So long as they are in the majority they don't sing that tune. Fundies rule, by foul means or fair. No difference to them. There really should be a hell just for them. So it sometimes seems. Sorry not to be more help.
GraphicsGuy Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 What gets me is he (Mr. Woodward) is the first person I have heard of, not counting TV, that was against prayer in school. Good grief...how small is his fucking universe?

Robbobrob Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 These types of small minded (world view-wise) people always remind me of the Democrat who commented after Nixon pounded McGovern into the pavement back 30 some odd years ago, "I don't know how Nixon could have won, everyone I knew voted for McGovern." When people can't see past their small group, and realize there are places very unlike theirs in the world, you get very slanted view of things. And that is never good for the people, it stunts their growth as compassionate human beings.
R. S. Martin Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 These types of small minded (world view-wise) people always remind me of the Democrat who commented after Nixon pounded McGovern into the pavement back 30 some odd years ago, "I don't know how Nixon could have won, everyone I knew voted for McGovern." This is where I was to scream: WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE LIKE THAT? I mean, that sentence in and of itself proves that the speaker KNOWS that the world is larger than the speaker's own social universe. 1. Nixon won. 2. Many more people voted for Nixon than for McGovern. 3. There must be very many more people in the country than the speaker knows. 4. The world must be much larger than the speaker has yet seen. 5. Logical conclusion: Speaker must get out and see this world, i.e. his/her curiosity should be peaked at this point to learn more about this great wide world out there. But like a dumb ox with a tummy full of grain he says "I don't know how Nixon could have won because everyone I know voted for McGovern." I wonder that the world continues to turn on its axis. There definitely cannot be a very intelligent designer behind the making of such a dull brain.
Amethyst Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I personally would never make a comment that could be construed as against organized religion in a public forum using my real name. It's too scary these days. You can be denied or fired from jobs if they don't see you as being totally politically correct. And companies search for anything they can dig up on you with your name and e-mail address before they hire you. Sad but true. Heaven forbid Atheists say or write anything we think or debate with a Christian publically, the Christians MUST be right 100% of the time. I cannot wait until Bush is out of office. I think it'll be a little safer then, but probably still not much. I hope that in 50 years from now, as a little old lady, I can go and find an archive of these forums on whatever version of the Internet exists at the time and laugh because things will be better then. But I can only hope.

Another reason for me to sing "Oh Canada" quietly to myself on a daily basis. Surely there are still some sane people in America. The people on this forum for example. Personally I guess I wouldn't want to work for a company that hires based on my adherence to xtianity. But I guess in the South and places like that, there might not be a lot of other choices. How frightening! Isn't your country founded on principles of free speech? Isn't that one of the things Americans are always going on about? Keep speaking your mind Rip! Don't let them beat you down. If prayer is ever allowed in schools again, I will believe in Armageddon. Intelligent design is terrifying enough.
DucorpsToo Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 ...then I pick another topic just so they will take an opinion against mine for the exact opposite reason they were againt me before...then reveal their hipocricy with their previous statements...ROFLMAO....I love to stir up small minded nitwits...LOL. Give them enough rope.....
Monk Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Rip, your replies to those wackos were much more civil, calm, and collected than their knee-jerk reactions warranted. Good for you for writing the original article and for standing your ground in the face of adversity. Don't let them get you down.

Technically, hiring based on adherence to Christianity is illegal, although some companies do just that. In most corporations, one has to keep their mouth shut about religion if your views are different than the majority. You have to be politically correct at all times. Most states are at will, meaning you can be fired at any time, no questions asked. Granted, some companies let some things slide...but they really are not supposed to. We technically have freedom of speech, but just google it and you'll see how many people lost their jobs due to what they said or wrote on their own personal time. Why do you think so many people take comfort in the anonymity of the Internet? Yet some people post on sites like Facebook, and then can't get hired a few years later because companies do research on them. Big Brother is here, now more than ever. I think it's even bigger than Orwell imagined. By the way, prayer has *always* been allowed in schools, any student can pray quietly to him or herself at any time. That has never been banned and such a ban couldn't be enforced anyway, if it were to be made. We have no mindreaders to enforce thoughtcrime laws, as far as we know. Christians forget that. They just want PUBLIC prayer so they can ram religion down everyone else's throats. PUBLIC prayer should be banned in any government institution, IMO.

RIPw4 Posted October 25, 2007 Author Posted October 25, 2007 I appreciate all your input. I made one last reply and after that I am not responding anymore. It will be posted tommorrow in the online paper. The thing that bothers me the most is that these people really believe with all their hearts that it is ok to push others down as long as they feel the bible permits it. To BurnedOut- What the hell were you doing in Clarksdale. The only thing we have going for us is the blues. Being a liberal in a town full of conservatives can be trying at times. It is actually commonplace here for people to refer to blacks as "democrats." Sickening but, I am not afraid of anything anyone thinks of me for my opinion. One thing I have learned in my life is that if people hate me for my beliefs, then I do not want to know them or work for them or have anything to do with them. I will love them for being humans but I will not associate myself with them. It is very sad day when it is ok to persecute others for their beliefs or non-beliefs.

I get them going at each other. I pass on rumors...LOL...about things I heard about a certian church if I know that person goes to a rival church...ROFLMAO....it is funny as hell to get them gossiping. They are the most gullible people there. And there are indeed many of them in little old Clarksdale...LOL interesting. Perhaps I will run into you one day being that I am working to finish my degree so i can teach English at the University Level.
Amethyst Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 This article and the comments describe pretty clearly how bad it's gotten in America in the workplace. Is Your Boss Spying on You? Inside New Workplace Surveillance Problem is, people need jobs to survive, and not everyone can work for themselves. It pisses me off that in order to survive in this country, our rights have been taken away. There's a quote by Ben Franklin that says "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both." I think that sums up our current situation. We've lost both and gained nothing.

I live in Virginia (not the Deep South, but still the South) and very few people hear what I really think about Christianity. At my workplace, my immediate supervisor is a conservative Christian. So far, there hasn't been any trouble stemming from that; perhaps she is one of the Christians who can keep it professional in the workplace. I hope so, because so far, she's been a decent boss. But I'm just really glad that I've never been drawn into a conversation about religion with any of the people where I work. I don't want to outright lie and pretend to agree with things that appall me; neither do I want to be so open that I get into trouble. I'm prepared to change the subject or find an excuse to depart the scene if such a conversation gets started.
