From God To Reality

Well...I have been a member here for about 4 years now, and I have never posted my "testimony".

I will try to make it short, but may add more later, as it's hard to recall your life story in one night :)

...Here goes:

I grew up in a very small, northern fishing town. The town probably had about a population of 2,000 at the time, yet there were at least 6 churches throughout town.

My mother was an alcoholic, and my father was basically non-existent...a voice on the phone every once in a while.

My grandparents lived in town and were Lutherans. So, of course, I went to church with them every Sunday. I also went to "Bible Camp" every summer to learn about Christianity and Jesus Christ. Looking back now, it was disgusting. Camp counselors would dare campers, and even bribe them, to hold their hands in flames to experience what Hell would be like. The counselors would also punish campers in very extreme ways. Some boys got in trouble one year and the counselors tied them naked to posts on the girl's side of camp. Another year, one of my bunk-mates was forced to remove his shirt and was tied around a tree with cologne on his back to attract mosquitoes, while his brother that same summer was told to roll around in poison ivy for not doing as he was told. Well, you get the idea...screwed up camp.

I was "Saved" at about the age of 11 at Bible Camp and was honored at my church upon returning home.

I loved God more than anything. I was all about learning as much as I could about him. I read the Bible and loved church.

Not too long later my mother decided to move. So we all packed up and headed down to Florida.

My Grandparents in Florida are Methodist, so we were immediately enrolled in that church. I went to Church every Sunday and Wednesday and was even a Youth Choir member.

I started to view church as being boring and a waste of time, as everyone I had been to was basically a popularity contest and a fashion show.

I hit my teens and became rebellious. I stopped going to church and thought religion was a joke. Not because I actually studied the history of it or other religions, but because I was rebellious.

Around my senior year of High School I started talking with my Dad. He was a devout Christian and I started studying it again so that I would have something to discuss with him. On top of this, I also had a dream around that time that I had died and went to heaven, and when I knocked on the gates of Heaven, Jesus appeared and told me that he did not know me. I then plummeted into Hell. I thought this dream was a sign from God, so I studied the Bible even more.

A few years went by and after spending many hours a week studying the Bible, other religions, and Church history, I finally started to despise it for all the right reasons. It was sickening and childish. The Christian God was a child with an angry temper, and Christianity was a rip-off of previous religions(ancient and current). The more I studied the more I despised Christianity and the millions of followers that blindly believed what they were told...not knowing a damn thing about their own damned religion.

One thing that turned me towards Atheism is how hateful and ignorant most of the Christians were that I met, and how peaceful and educated the Atheists were. I was a miserable Christian towards the end. I hated God. I asked him daily to give extremely simple signs to prove himself. When something went bad, he was punishing me, just like the Bible says.

So, here I am...almost 24 years old. I have since studied many topics like Psychology, Geology, and Physics. I know that there is absolutely no way I could ever fall for such a scam again, and I will spend the rest of my life educating those who want to learn. I have become extremely skeptical and examine everything to the full extent before giving it any credit.

Now, I am an Atheist, and I don't think I've ever been more at peace. I see the world as being absolutely beautiful, and not just a temporary living space before eternity. I pity the fundamentalist religious people of the world, but I still have hope for them(even though I want to strangle the ones that try to convert everyone they meet).

Life has definitely been more real and amazing for me since leaving the cult. I have had a wonderful girlfriend for over 7 years, who I am now engaged to, that is also an Atheist, and I am in college working towards my degree.

This site is absolutely amazing. I tend to come here for advice before anywhere else, and I really appreciate everybody here(Especially Dave for making this site in the first place).

I have pretty much stated my current beliefs on my Myspace page at:

Good anti-testimony SFS! That Bible Camp stuff is pure madness!

The Christian God is indeed an immature pervert with an anger problem. We humans are even better than that character.

This is what is so amazing. It's so opposite of what the church teaches. It seems that everything xianity teaches about "the world" is true about itself. Maybe it's projection big time.

I also went to Bible Camp. Only I was Catholic so things were more understated. The boys camp across the lake - rumor has it that the priests used to "diddle" the kids. SICKOS

Lol, no diddling at my camp to my knowledge.

It was pretty funny, though, that they allowed an ex-convict into the camp to preach all summer because he had been saved in Prison. The guy had some serious issues and looked like a hobo, but was allowed 24 hour access to all campers because he had been "reborn". :Wendywhatever:
