Goodbye Jesus

Some Questions

Hi everyone. You may remember I posted around 4-6 months back. I'm still in a similar position to before, doubting my faith but unable to give it up. I actaully admire you guys who were able to make such a clean break for deconversion. Anyway I realised that there were a few issues in my mind that have been preventing me from accepting that Christianity is a sham. I wanted to put these questions forward and see the response. Some of these questions have complex answers, I know. But much in the same way I'm having trouble accepting Christianity due to some difficult questions, I'm having trouble rejecting Christianity due to these ones.

1. Why, anthropologically speaking, does almost every culture have some concept of marriage? It would seem like a God-implanted natural law.

2. The argument by design question; why is everything so millimetre perfect for our planet to sustain life? How could this happen by chance?

3. Why has Judiasm hung around so long? As Mark Twain says 'What is the secret of the Jews immorality?'

4. How could the state of Israel be re-instituted without divine guidance (I know a very controversial, political question. I hesistated to put this one, but its one that sits in the back of my mind. I guess even super-sessionalist Christians would disagree with modern Israel being a Godly state. I'm well-informed on Zionism; by birth, I'm Jewish [that's not to say I'm a Zionist]. Nonetheless it still strikes me as 'difficult' that Jews could hang around for 2500 years, and reclaim such a large parcel of land without some Godly interference).

This is all I can think of at the moment. I'll try to write some as they come to me. Cheers.

That should be some study group you have this year!

Marriages are important in societies everywhere, whether religious or not. It shows a public bonding between two people who have chosen to let everyone know they are no longer available for marriage. They found their true love. It gives families a sense of identity to know who your parents are and that your parents are committed to each other for life. Stability.

I don't know about godly interference in establishing Israel! They had the help of the US and Britain. Suicide bombing began in the region when the zionists blew themselves up with British soldiers working to keep peace in the region. That was how Israel was established, through terrorism, not godly influence. The Jews were the first suicide bombers.

About the planet. What is perfection on a planetary scale? One could argue that chaos and chance reign supreme in the cosmos. Our planet may be the only with life. It may be one of many with life. It may also be the first with life or it may be the last planet with life. That is why we explore the unknown, to find answers that do not come easy.

Its not exactly on topic but a couple of days ago I was reading 1Cor12 and got to ver 9 when it hit me. I have been given the gift of faith. That was nearly 30 years ago now. I was at home, an unbeliever, non church attending, had no concerns or health worries when all of a sudden it was impressed on my mind that the Bible was completely true from cover to cover. I immediately couldn't help myself but read the Bible with great fervour. It was as if blinkers fell off. I couldn't put it down for many many weeks. I could see the world COMPLETELY differently. It is the same today.

How did it happen? I was not searching at all at the time. Although I have been involved with church since, I haven't gone for the last 12 or so years as the leadership of my local church left MUCH to be desired. As a matter of fact, I'm really almost angry at him for a number of VERY important reasons, one of them being honesty.

Because I'm not involved with other believers, I'm spiritually weak but my faith is ROCK-SOLID. If that makes me a target, then so be it.

Cheers

That's nice. So, why didn't God give us "the gift of faith"? Why did he think you were more special and deserving of this gift than any of us, especially when the bible says that God does not show favoritism? And how do you know it was your God who gave you this faith? How do you know it wasn't the devil of some other religion giving you this faith to tempt you into believing the wrong religion so you would be punished by another religion's God? And because I wasn't searching for any answers at the time when I realized Christianity was bullshit, does that mean it proves that Christianity is bullshit?

Neon Genesis - I always appreciate when the undertones of arrogance and egocentrism of believers are brought to the surface. We let them get away with it far too often.

Redadare- Oh the privilege you must feel. If only your sky captain found me worthy as well to be gifted with a shortcut to truth and to be exempted from toiling in the land of reason like the rest of us. You must be so special. Can I have your autograph? Indeed Redadare, your blinkers did fall off. ...Asshole!

Angry? Rock solid faith? :ugh:

Is that what they tell you.

Hahaha. Well I have to follow a set lesson plan. The study group is for college students, and the topic is 'salvation by grace'. So when they all start getting hammered at parties and shagging, they don't feel they have to stop coming to church :P.

It's all true? Then you believe all the tales in the bible about talking animals, talking plants, flying horses, angels, demons, devils, virgin births, zombies coming back to life, whores riding around on dragons, etc etc etc?

Cuckoo, cuckoo!

On the sex thing LFT,

There must be something special that is intended for marriage, virginity, etc.. if the propensity is towards porn, infidelity, etc.. When you have children and learn what mature love is after years of marriage, you will have wished you had waited....

As I said before, if everyone had a propensity to porn and infidelity, and if that propensity was given to us by God, then everyone on Earth would be married and porn and infidelity would not even exist. Obviously though porn and infidelity do exist, and not everyone gets married, so are you saying God didn't give the propensity against these things to everybody and God is purposely tempting people into sin, or is this proof that how much value one places on marriage is entirely cultural and man-made and has nothing at all to do with invisible sky daddies?

I never said that I like infidelity although I do like porn. I was merely pointing out that if people are repulsed at these things because God gave them repulsion towards it, then God must have screwed up and isn't perfect after all, since obviously not everyone is repulsed by them, otherwise they wouldn't even exist at all.

Thanks for the responses guys.

6. Why is religious belief such an integral part of so many culturals? Why are people so inherently spiritual? It must run deeper than a lack of other plausible explanations.

Peer pressure.
