Ahh, A South Indian Evangelical Pentecostal Wedding.

So most of you guys know that I come from a south indian pentecostal background...and that I'm currently a closet atheist. Well, tomorrow I have a wedding to go to. The girl getting married is from our church, a daughter of one of the associate ministers here...Normally, weddings mean fun and free food (and booze to boot!) but in my very specific culture it's torture. Instead of a quick service I have to endure two to three hours of messages, psalm readings, sermons and songs. To add to the suffering, the messages are usually extremely offensive, at least to anyone with a fiber of feminism - the sermons always read that passage from Paul's regarding marriage, and a minister always comments that a wife is subservient to the husband...My insides cringe to believe people believe shit like that.

Anyway, wish me luck. If I don't post soon I've drowned myself in the punch bowl.

Sounds awful! Good luck! Fortunately, most weddings I've been to have not been preachy at all.

Get drunk first, then go. Choir practice is not always for Sundays.

The best weddings I have ever been to have always started off better with a party before. You know the service is going well when the preacher needs help to stand at the pulpit.

If you cannot have a couple of drinks ahead of time, take some in a plastic squeeze bottle. You can always go to the can to get away.

I'm back! I survived by basically skipping the entire service. I left the wedding hall and hung out in the lobby for a few hours...infinitively preferable to the snooze fest inside. Afterwards I enjoyed some nice food and talked to some friends...had to endure a few minutes of body worship (have you guys seen this shit? totally stupid) but otherwise it was nice.

Need more information! What the heck is a south Indian pentecostal church... as in India? I learn something new here every day. Please describe body worship.

Is that...a cross dildo? I guess Christ really does love you...

My family came from a region of south india where Christianity has been present for over a thousand years...The Syrian Orthodox Church, to be exact. In the early 20th century Pentecostalism began spreading in this region as result of western evangelism...my grandfather was a pioneer Pentecostal minister in india. Fast forward to today, and here I am, an american of Indian ethnicity, with an evangelical family.

Body worship is weird....I guess it's a sophisticated term for action songs, but whatever it is it's stupid. Basically people dance to Christian music, doing particular patterns and waving their hands and other garbage to communicate the message of the songs. I don't know where it comes from, frankly...
