Since the world is filled with more "followers" then leaders, it makes sense. Throw in a heaping dose of fear of death, and you have masses groveling at the feet of an imaginary god... That statement would imply that man has always worshiped which is a good case for the hardwiring of worship into our being, because man has always been a social creature, and society is based on the concept of hierarchy, much the same way religion is.
