Guest SerenityNow
For the first time since leaving Christianity, I did it!! Wow, what a good movie. It was the last movie but we are really looking forward to watching the first two and enjoying those good quality books. Boy, talk about the Christian hype over this. I saw absolutely ZERO difference in Harry Potter than the Lord of the Rings, which we KNOW Christians find perfectly acceptable. Hmmm....I guess if you're a "christian" writer you can write a porn book and it would be acceptable over a secular writer. My son is almost 11 and he really really, enjoyed that movie, he loved it! Ah, well. To each his/her own. I TRIED to watch Potter and LOTR, but I found them silly and unbelievable. But enough of my movie opinion. I'd like to warn everyone about generalizations of Xian viewpoints. Not ALL Xians applauded LOTR. As a matter of fact, many Xians deplore ALL fiction/sci-fi/fantasy, no matter WHO writes them. (People such as C.S. Lewis, Timothy Lahaye and Frank Perretti are constantly castigated for their work in some Xian circles.) Also, you should be aware that LOTR is NOT universally counted as "Xian" fiction by all Xians. Even J.R.R. Tolkein (not a Xian) said in a final interview before his death that his LOTR novels were NOT Xian allegory. He said he "despised allegory whenever he smelled it"! Just thought I'd add this bit of information, before everyone waded in with spurious presumptions. Carry on.

My fundamentalist brothers and their families don't allow Harry Potter because of the witchcraft. However, other stories involving magic seem to be ok - it's not consistent but seems to be a group thing - whatever the Southern Baptist leadership harps on gets banned. Other things that seem identical to me get a pass. ******** I'm glad you enjoyed the movie Thankful - I'm eagerly awaiting the 6th book that is being released this Friday. LOTR used to be criticized for being the source of the DoD games and people commiting suicides. And also being the introduction to dark magic etc. Also, you should be aware that LOTR is NOT universally counted as "Xian" fiction by all Xians. Christians adopting LOTR is a very new phenomenon. When I grew up LOTR was considered bad in religious circles. Even J.R.R. Tolkein (not a Xian) said in a final interview before his death that his LOTR novels were NOT Xian allegory. He said he "despised allegory whenever he smelled it"! Right. He didn't write it as an allegory of anything, he wrote it as an epic story of fantasy, for entertainment. Just thought I'd add this bit of information, before everyone waded in with spurious presumptions. Carry on. Good addition.

Merlinfmct87
J. R. R. Tolkien was a confirmed devout Catholic. While LotR is not a Christian Allegory, there are (slight)traces of his beliefs in the book. So ironic when the Christians condemn works from their own flock, is it not? Purple Rhino
I really didn't think I'd be a fan of Harry Potter. Then a bookclub I used to be in selected the first in the series, so I read it and got hooked. As far as the whole christian vs. Potter debate in my own family, My neices and nephew have been deprived of Potter-mania and I think it's a shame. Personally I believe that it is the rebellion against conforming to status quo that most xians are affraid of. Harry gives hope to kids who are different and fights against the Dursley's who constantlytried to beat him down and make him "normal". Much more than just the magical element. So good for you thankful! I believe that the whole series of films are great for all ages and a fantastic way to have family time. PR

Checkmate
Isn't that the point? Yeah, I suppose so. It's just that for ME to enjoy a fantasy, I must be able to suspend my disbelief, and believe it to be possible(?) Ah, the heck with it! Let's just say "I didn't like them" and leave it at that. Once again, carry on with the merriment. Edited to add: P.S. - Let's keep this thread conversation in mind for when "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" hits the big screen. I predict we'll see as much Xian support for this "Xian fantasy" as we did for "The Passion of the Christ." And just as much criticism from some Xian factions. Ouroboros
I love the Narnia books too. TK, you're more into sci-fi or just regular novels? Actually I didn't like reading the LOTR, because it got to slow and drawn-out at some places. The movie is more entertaining.

TruthWarrior
I used to have the box set of the old movies for the Narnia books. I think its on DVD now. Now there is a new Narnia movie coming out from Disney soon. Here's the IMDB website (with movie trailers) and the official website. Looks pretty good. I think my favorite fantasy movie would be Dragonslayer. I have it on DVD. Its the best dragon-slaying movie out there.
Merlinfmct87
I remember what Disney did to Wrinkle in Time and (get your vomit packs ready) The Black Cauldron. Coming from someone who read the books, that movie was a disgrace. I don't think I could ever forgive them for that... Thank goodness Harry got better treatment!! Actually I didn't like reading the LOTR, because it got to slow and drawn-out at some places. The movie is more entertaining. I USED to be heavily into sci-fi and fantasy novels. But then I "got religion" and Jesus fucked up my pleasures. (Just one more thing I lost in Pascal's fucking Wager!) To be fair, though, I suppose I have simply outgrown my old passion for fiction. Every once in awhile I go into a book store and look over the titles. The old tingle and delight I felt is gone. Ah well. I only read "regular", non-fiction stuff now. (Fucking boring!) Such is life. Thank goodness I still love cartoons! (The Incredibles rocked!)

Ouroboros
My 7yo had nightmares after just a couple of chapters so I axed it. She would rather hear sweet stories. Major stuffed animal girl and sweetness to boot. One time she had a Godzilla toy and a T-Rex toy. "Hello Godzilla, how are you today?" T-Rex," I'm fine, how are you?" "Great, would you like to play with me?" "Sure, that would be a good idea!" Son walks in and says, "That is not how you play with those, this is"...takes toys and fights LOL
