Brother Jeff
This thread was magically inspired by mentions of Keith in another thread. Anybody else here heavily influenced by Keith Green and his music? I certainly was. My friend Mike not only led me to the Lard back in 1985, he also introduced me to Keith's music. To say that my life was transformed by Keith's music and message would be putting it mildly. For a long time, I'm not sure who I held in higher esteem or worshiped more - Keith or Jesus. I loved them both immensely. Through some of the hardest times of my life I listened to Keith's music, worshiped with Keith's music, and tried to be as dedicated as Keith obviously was to Kryasst. Jesus was the Holy Farter, but Keith was damned close to having the same status in my mind. Glory! I even sang solos of Keith's music in church - songs like "Lard, You're Beautiful", "Make My Life a Prayer to You", "When I Hear the Praises Start", and probably a few others. When Mike told me that Keith was dead, I was devastated. He was just 28 years old when he Croaked in the Spook, yet his life and message made a tremendous impact in the Christian world - one that still continues on today, 26 years after his death. What he believed wasn't true and his devotion was wasted on a nonexistent god and savior, but still... man... what a life, and what a legacy... Guess I still even now have feelings of hero worship toward the man... I rarely listen to Christian music anymore, but when I do listen to Keith I am still moved by his music and his devotion, even though I no longer believe his message. I still feel spiritual joy when I listen to him even though I am no longer a believer. Etchison
I was (and am) mostly repulsed by Christian music. It's got as much intellectual capitol as spit-up from an infant. Most Christian musicians are attention whores who have absolutely nothing to say. (Another exception was a little-known guy named Jeff Johnson.) Keith was different. He was a truly talented musician, singer, songwriter, and said the *most* unpopular things. He was a true fundamentalist, which makes him even crazier than the attention whores, but much more consistent. I wonder what would have become of him if he hadn't have died? He might have left Christianity, or his cult might have become more and more extreme. Probably the latter.
Vigile
I couldn't answer the poll. I loved Keith. He was definately my favorite and a huge influence in my life as an xian. I now look back and pity the guy and resent the impact he had on my life. It was a life fully emersed in fantasy and phony conviction. I almost went to his wife's bible school. I am not sure what changed my mind as I already had gone through the grueling application process by pouring my heart out on their application form telling them how sold out I was for the 2000 yo dead jew. OnceConvinced
Loved his music. "The prodical son" was brilliant. Can't say he was my favourite though. One of my favourites is a guy named Len Magee, an English singer who had a bit of a country influence in some of his music. His music always stirred me and still does. It just goes to show you that if Christian music can still touch an ex-Christian, it's obviously not the Holy Spirit that does it!
Vendredie
I hated most Christian music when I was a Christian. It was dull and repetitive and most of the Christian songs sounded way too much like love songs, which seemed really, really awkward. You can take most Christian songs and replace "Jesus" with any other name and get something like a very obsessive love song. The closest to "CHristian" anything I listen to gets in vague and occasional references to Xtianity in Nightwish songs.
Rhia
You forgot the option: "Keith Green was a stupid hippie Messianic wanna-be cult leader whose music sucked ass almost as much as his ministry did!". That, would be my response. "WTF?!" just does not cover my disgust for that man.
Brother Jeff
You forgot the option: "Keith Green was a stupid hippie Messianic wanna-be cult leader whose music sucked ass almost as much as his ministry did!". That, would be my response. "WTF?!" just does not cover my disgust for that man. It was painful, but I added your option to the poll. I no longer believe Keith's message, but I still respect his devotion to his beliefs.

XtianChris
Anyone else here have similar feelings about Keith or another Christian artist? I had to reply "WTF?" to this poll, simply because I was neither a fan nor a foe of Keith Green's music. In other words, I was impartial. Now, as for his ministry, I don't know how much he infected the world, but I can imagine that he was not one to sit back and let people have their own beliefs. In that regard, I cannot hold much (if any) respect for the man. Oddly enough though, I do still happen to like music by Third Day and Rich Mullins. I wish I could hate their music, but I just don't. Most other xtian artists can suck it though, because that's exactly what their music does.
