Guest danny64
Jehovah’s Deposition The Christian's Bible is a drug store. Its contents remain the same; but the medical practice changes...The world has corrected the Bible. The church never corrects it; and also never fails to drop in at the tail of the procession- and take the credit of the correction. During many ages there were witches. The Bible said so. the Bible commanded that they should not be allowed to live. Therefore the Church, after eight hundred years, gathered up its halters, thumb-screws, and firebrands, and set about its holy work in earnest. She worked hard at it night and day during nine centuries and imprisoned, tortured, hanged, and burned whole hordes and armies of witches, and washed the Christian world clean with their foul blood. Then it was discovered that there was no such thing as witches, and never had been. One does not know whether to laugh or to cry.....There are no witches. The witch text remains; only the practice has changed. Hell fire is gone, but the text remains. Infant damnation is gone, but the text remains. More than two hundred death penalties are gone from the law books, but the texts that authorized them remain. Mark Twain--"Bible Teaching and Religious Practice," Europe and Elsewhere The bible was the number one piece of evidence in my deconversion process. I am pleased that it has been preserved in all of its brutal, contradictory, and primitive glory for low these many years. It is interesting to see how different apologists and lay believers will find ways to dodge and twist the text to avoid the obvious meaning. If one is to be a 21st century christian, what is the best way to react to all the problems presented? What method do you use if you are a christian? And for non-believers, what method frustrates you most? What other techniques are used? 1) the problem passages are different when read in the original language 2) some scribe made a mistake in copying the text 3) it’s allegorical 4) it’s taken out of context 5) the bible is a “holy text” but true Christians have jesus in their hearts and He tells them the truth 6) stick to your inerrant guns and defend every last passage
Crazycatlady
When I was a Christian, #3 (allegorical) was my excuse. 5 and 6 irritate me the most.
