Neon Genesis
My mother is a fundie but she's surprisingly voting for Obama because Mccain is too extreme even for her and she thinks Palin is a lunatic. This elderly lady at her church that my mother is friends with has been trying to convince her to vote for Mccain, even though my mother already has her mind made up on who to vote for. My mother told me that last night at church, this lady told her that Obama was a dictator because he comes from a country of dark-skinned people that are dictators. Last I checked, Obama was born in the U.S. Wouldn't he even not be allowed to run for president if he was from another country? If anyone is a dictator, it's Mccain/Palin who are closer to being dictators, so she certainly has no right to talk, especially since this lady thinks Christians deserve special privileges like the rest of the fundies. This is just so blatantly racist and it disgusts me. My parents' church helps out a lot with the Inner City congregation and they do have some members of the congregation who are black, so this lady pisses me off with how she'll act nice and friendly to your face while acting so racist behind people's backs. My grandmother who's fundie too has also stated that she's not voting for Obama because he's black. I just get this queezy feeling of disgust when people act racist to a race of people. What's ironic is that these Christians act like they have the moral high ground over everybody else and claim to preach a message of love but then they act so bigoted to a race of people. Justin
Good post. I don't know many racists, but the ones i do know are christians, fundamentalists too. I think it plays into their philosophy of bigotry. They think women are worth less than men, homosexuals are hell bound sinners, and that other people of other faiths are wrong and crazy and hell bound sinners too. Some of these christians will point to the curse of Ham as the source of their views on blacks. They will also, sometimes, point out the slavery in the bible to justify their position to. Whats even more bizarre and outright insane is many of these fundies will say they don't dislike blacks, they are just following what the bible says, what god tells them to via the bible. Sick. Guest Freepagan
OMFG!!!!! I'm going to share that video with some of my other friends. I grew up around fundamentalist christians, and I have experienced their racism from both sides (black & white). It's a crying shame.
WCrystal
You guys can't just blame it on christianity. I've met people who don't believe in any sort of god(s) who are racist, believe women are lower then men, and that homosexuals are bad/wrong in every way. It's just ignorance. You can't blame religion on every case, though religion DOES play a huge part most of the time. Still sad though. I did meet a guy who didn't want to date me anymore after a few dates because I told him I dated a black guy. What-the-fuck-ever. Humans are strange, sad little creatures. And I'm going to leave it at that. Because they fucking confuse me.
Llwellyn
It has not been my experience that Christians are any more racist than any other group of people. Racism is obnoxious, but I figure that the best punishment for racism is to leave them with the racist mentality they have. Nothing is more idiotic than a grown adult holding prejudices against a person simply because of their skin color.

Well that is a major part of what morontheism is about - finding "justification" for your own hatred, bigotry and Herrenmenschentum.

What better copout for defending your own hatemongering than telling others "It's not me you need to mess with, tell it to gawd! Nyah Nyah!" mwc
I don't think it that xianity creates the problem but it might slow the solution. When you (as others have said) think you have the moral high ground, or maybe you think your "god" wants you to think a certain way, or you're just part of a group think situation, or whatever, then you have less motivation to examine why it is you think the way you do (about anything) and so you continue to think that way. That gets passed along to your kids and so on. What may have been solved in one or two generations takes 5 or 6 (I'm just tossing out numbers...I don't know). Somethings get so ingrained as "wrong" they take much longer. Also, the idea of "forgiveness" allows for a person to have "personal demons" such as racism and still be "forgiven" by the big man above so that takes away any motivation to change or self-examine since prayer is so much easier (ie. like asking for permission versus asking for forgiveness...most tend towards the latter). mwc
Guest
One of the things I have had to work rather hard to irradicate is the racism that was all around me growing up. In church, at home, at school (at school, we would run around calling each other the "N" word and nobody ever said a thing, but I was sent to the office repeatedly for wearing all black and would have to change and be sent to detention for it). My dad would tell me on numerous occaisions to "never trust a n----". It wasn't till I started to jam with other musicians and form bands that I realized the racist things I was taught was utter bullshit, and that realization in turn helped me to remember that everything xtians taught me was bullshit. *EDIT* The only thing I was taught about black people that was true is that they have better rythm than white folks. MAN, the only drummers I will drop everything to play with are black drummers!** I live in a somewhat rich whitey area, and I have seen alot of lawn signs that state: "Another Democrat for McCain". To me, this reads simply as this: "Another white man that can not bring himself to even consider voting for blacky." It really, really pisses me off how people can never challange what they were brought up with. I saw someone introduce McCain on TV the other day and refered to Obama as Barak Hussein Obama. WTF does his middle name have to do with anything about him or the election except to bring up xenophobic fears in rich white america? There are just so many reasons I hate xtianity, I don't think I'll ever uncover them all.
Unknowing1
It's my opinion that religion can cause someone to become intolerant and non accepting of others. Once you become intolerant or non accepting it can manifest itself into particular categories or types of bigotry. In this area (Richmond, VA) most churches are racially segregated. Since a lot of people here tend to socialize within their church community they aren't exposed to people who are of a different religion or ethnicity except in limited situations. I really feel that a person living in a bubble where they surround themselves with people who are exactly like them don't have a clue about anything else but their own little world. They can and do make opinions based only on what others have said. When that message is one of hate or one of fear someone might not want to leave their comfort zone to really find out the truth for themselves. While I do believe that there are other influences as well that enter into it all I do believe that religion can be a contributing factor to prejudices. Vixentrox
When I was young I was taught racism (of Jews) in church and Christian school. Jews were Christ killers, greedy thieves, hell bound, and the cause of many of the evils that exist.
Dr. Reality
I am black and I got to see quite a bit of racism of blacks toward whites, having grown up in a predominately black church. Even when the issue of Jesus's ethnicity came up, there was always this big debate about the blond hair blue eyed Jesus vs. The dark skinned version of Jesus. Even as a child I found this quite bizarre. There would be people at the church, even those in high positions that would say something if I or someone else would be interested in someone of another race. I mean, why would so called god have a problem with an interracial couple? It was all so dumb and certainly a bunch of hypocrisy, but then again xianify itself is a bunch of hypocrisy and ignorance, IMHO.

Neon Genesis
This past weekend we went to go visit my grandma on my dad's side of the family for her birthday. For some reason, my fundy family always debates politics and religion when we go visit them. I don't mind debating these things, but my family is just so ignorant and closed minded, I can't stand to discuss it with them. My grandma showed her bigotry again this weekend when she said she didn't want to vote for Obama because the way he looked scared her. Wtf, what's scary about Obama's appearance and what does his appearance have to do with anything? Now I have two grandparents who are racist since my other grandmother on my mother's side also refuses to vote for Obama just because he's black. What the fuck is wrong with these people? Vomit Comet
In my experience the church went out of its way to discourage racism. It's probably because I was in Southern California. Also, most congregations I found myself in had a significant chunk of Mexicans along with some token blacks, Asians, and Middle Easterners and others. There was one church I went to for a while in the 'hood that was 99% Mexican.
Amethyst
I grew up around fundy Christians too, and yeah, the church reeked of the whole "if you aren't white, physically perfect, middle-class or rich, conservative, fundamentalist, and homophobic, you just aren't good enough" attitude. It really pissed me off. I mean seriously. Skin color is such a stupid thing to judge people on. We are all human, and our actions matter way more than what people look like. Our culture is too much of a superficial society.
