I went to some trouble to log-in (expired email) only to find someone who sent me a private message.

I really do believe in "Spam" or anything that irritates the adverage Internaut Expect when they are actively trying

to outright 'scam' the user .. .. Spammer is a lovely Christian woman who says

" .. Presently this money is still in the Vault of the finance firm.Having known my condition I decided to hand over this money to an individual,Brother or sister that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct herein.

 

I want that you use this money according to the desire of my late.husband to help the Less privileged,orphanages,and propagating the word of God. I took this decision because I don’t have any child that will inherit this money, And I don’t want in away where this money will be used in an ungodly way. This is why I am taking this decision to hand you over this money.

 

I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going.I want you to always remember me in your daily prayers because of my up coming Cancer Surgery.

Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I have Stated herein. Hope to receive your urgent reply. So, basically, you'd like us admins go through and read everyone's PM's everyday, and make sure they only approved messaging is going on between all of you? ... No, I don't think so. You would say your privacy was in danger if we did. So that is out of the option. Since you're very new at this site I can only assume that you really don't know how this forum works. This forum is very open for free speech. With that comes a responsibility on the parties (participants) instead of the police. What you're asking for is to establish some form of FBI/CIA/KGB socialism where we secretly spy on everyone and make sure they don't offend someone here or there. But we won't do that! Instead, you report, we deal with it. We won't spend every breathing second of our day searching, looking, and intentionally trying to fix every thing we feel are inappropriate. The responsibility is ON YOU! We're not mom's with some sixth-sense intuition of where the dirty laundry is hiding, and we go in to your room and pick up the socks from under your bed while you're sleeping. If you need our help: then PM us instead of accusing.

 

Besides, it seems like the action WAS taken, so I'm not sure why you're ranting about the moderators not doing anything? What else did you want the moderators to do, besides banning the spammer? Should we try to find her/his home address and go and knock down the door and take the person in for questioning? Or should we maybe automatically start deleting the PM's so you don't have to read them? I mean, come on! Please, put that attitude away! It's rather offending to the people who moderate this website, who do it for free, and on their spare time.

 

Oh, and another thing, I didn't get the spam PM. And I don't have the user name on the person who did this. If you want us to do something, don't send is minimal information, but gives us the pertinent stuff we need to actually be able to ACT! Since I don't know which Mary (I can see two in the system). Maybe I should just delete both accounts, and from now on, no one will be allowed to have the word "mary" in their user name? So please, give us the information we need, and do it before you complain about "nothing being done."

I received this spam PM at a different forum, so someone has learned how to spam PMs I guess.

 

The difference is that I took the woman up on her offer. But instead of using the money for good Christian causes, I'm spending it on hookers and good booze. I hope I get the check before the credit card bill gets here.

I took it upon myself to report the email address to "her" email provider when I found the PM I received. I also came here to report sistermary to the mods, but saw that "she" (they usually pretend to be women) had already been taken care of.

Those were my thoughts exactly, Brick. It seems as though our Nigerian spammer needs to learn the meaning of "ex." But the good news is, he wasted a lot of time trying to spam so many ex-Christians (I rarely post here, yet he sent me one), when he more than likely would have found more people to take the bait at Christian websites.

 

cheffranden, this happens all over the web. As a global admin of a remotely hosted message board system, I have dealt with my fair share of these scammers, including having their email accounts disabled by their providers.

Please use the ! REPORT button in the future. Also most of us mods have day jobs, we cannot be on 24/7, though usually at least one person is on. Hence why the ! REPORT button exists.

As much as Im into this.. I had a Herculean struggle in a task in finding a "dead" e-mail account for this;

I don't rat out spammer/scammers when they show up in my inbox (never had them here yet). I prefer sending e-mails back calling them names I'd never use in a public forum. I prefer to attack them (and sometimes they get so offended, they try to intimidate me with a threatening letter, which only makes me come up with a whole new round of insults and name calling).

IMO we should feel free to report any and all manner of spam and trolling PM or not. Thats why the moderators/administrators are here.
