The story that was aired last night on 20/20 describes a little girl that essentially doesn't age. She is currently 16, but still looks like a pre-toddler. True, she might not live any longer than the rest of us, but then again she might. This makes me think of men living a few hundred years perhaps?

What say you communists!

I'm confused. What are we supposed to be commenting on? The girl who doesn't age, or people living to be hundreds of years old? I also don't see how the two connect and you didn't provide enough information about the girl. Do you have a Wikipedia article on her or anything?

Just poking at the heathens here Skeptic... they are always quick to post articles that support anything anti-Bible. The potential relationship exists in that she might have a lifespan that would last much longer than ours.....supporting some of the lifespans that are mentioned in the Bible.

I will see if I can find a link.

Jesus always struck me as a communist. He clearly had no love for the rich- said that they pretty much can't go to heaven. He wanted them to give ALL their money to the poor. He said that the rich on earth would be poor in heaven, and the poor on earth would be rich in heaven. He blessed the poor. He hung out with a tax collector. He kicked ass and took names when a bunch of capitalists setup shop in the temple. Oh, and he lived in a COMMUNE with a bunch of fellow hippies.

She's a 16-year-old toddler with the mental capacity as such, apparently. Are you suggesting this was the norm back in those days?

I'm an atheist, but I remember being given a reasonable explanation for Biblical ages when I was in Sunday School. We were told that it was a problem of translation since people did not use the same words and math to record the passage of time in ancient times as they do today. Thus, I was taught, we should assume that the ancient people in the Bible had normal age spans, and that the idiomatic or literary meaning of the supposed several hundred year life spans is lost to us today.

I speak three languages, and I understand the many problems of translation. One must be immersed in the psychology and values of the two languages, not just the words, when translating. We simply don't have anthropological/sociological/psychological/psycholinguistic studies of the ancients that were done while they were still alive, and for this reason bits and pieces gleaned from surviving texts, many of them biased, are what we base our knowledge on. Much ancient culture and many hidden meanings are lost to us.

In addition, the Bible was written by people more concerned with spiritual values than the specifics of workaday physical life, and for this reason we need to take what they have told us about physical life, Biblical ages included, with a grain of salt.

So she's a freak. Who cares?

When she turns 27 she'll wrinkle up faster than Nadia Comaniche.

Her physical appearance may not change, but she will die like the rest of us. As for the higher than normal ages in the OT, it was a method for story tellers to emphasize the importance of a character--it's purely literary.

I saw the story and from what I understand she had a number of health issues over the years. Without "modern" medicine she may have, in all likelihood, simply died already. So she is a mutation. One of those things mentioned in, you know, that there "theory" of evolution. The problem is she cannot pass on this mutation.

But it may be in her siblings. So her family may well possess the "secret" to longevity or they may be an evolutionary dead-end. What the scientists are doing is by-passing this random chance and studying the girl directly. And they'll attempt to work a little evolutionary magic themselves. This could be something great, or like some other attempts at this, could cause organs to fail and other nasty side-effects. Perhaps it would cause everyone to "regress" (devolve?) to a pre-pubescent stage or some odd thing like that? Who knows? That's why animal testing still exists since computers can't test for these types of things quite yet.

As for biblical ages? The girl is only 16. Maybe she'll die next year or maybe live to be 1000. It's way too early to speculate on this. For all we know she'll die at whatever the average age for women is when she gets "old" and look and think like a 2 year old. If we wish to apply this to the biblical story then this should tell us that Adam and Eve were certainly not mentally able to comprehend the instructions given to them nor defend themselves from the serpent. They were not justly punished.

We do need more information. Are was talking some form of primordial dwarfism? The opposite of that early aging disorder? Does she have mental retardation because of whatever her condition maybe? We don't have enough information go on with what little you told us.

IF she has had a number of health issues, then I would think that it is an inaccurate description to say she is aging slowly. This does not sound like a person who is aging at a slower rate than others one the inside- just on the outside. IF she is so tiny, I would think it was a form of dwarfism, in which case, such individuals usually don't live as long as others, regardless of how young they may look, much less capable of having children. I think the idea of her having longevity is a bit pre-mature, at least until we have more information on her condition.

I'm not sure why that relates. There are plenty of people today where their looks is aging slower than their physical condition. I'm a "slow-ager" too. I you look at my wedding photo, I'm 22, but I look like 12. Seriously. I look like a kid. People are shocked. When I was teenager, I looked like 9-10. And I had to constantly show my ID in my mid 30's to get a drink. But this slowly tapered off in my late 30's. Even so, I can only expect to (hopefully) live as long as most people. When I work out, eat better, shave, I look like 30, and I'm 44.

Biologically, if certain conditions were met, we could live much, much, longer. Scientists know this, and of course the Christians can speculate in the idea if 6,000 years ago, those conditions were met. In essence, if I remember right, the mDNA is losing parts of its ends each time it's divided (telomeres shorting?), so eventually a cell can't divide anymore (or rather, the mDNA is useless after divide, and the cell dies). I think the average number of divisions is 24 (or something), and average life span of a cell is 7 years (I hope I got this right). Which means that theoretically we can live to 7x24 years = 168. But if we could figure out a way to protect the slow destruction of the mDNA, or replace it with fresh ones (and the mDNA is much less mutated than DNA), we could extend at least that part of life (cell aging). /and I probably totally butchered the science of biology here, but I think I'm fairly close./

Back again to the girl. What worries me though is that society today will not look favorable to her having a relationship. When she's in her 20's, she look like a minor, and any boyfriend she get, will risk persecution for being a "pedophile" and even worse, being charged with it. And the reason is, the guy she get, must by societies standard, want to be with a minor, since she looks like one. (Child pornography laws are made that way now. It's about how it looks like, not about the real age of anyone involved.) So I feel for her. She's going to have problems.

I find the whole attempt to make mythological content have scientific plausibility at best to have a sort of tabloid-like entertainment value. It's great for TV shows like In Search Of, or some other such quasi-research sensationalistic genre.

How much simpler to just accept them as a feature of story telling, than to make them something that fits a modern concept of scientific reality. It totally misses the point of them. You might well just toss your Bible in the trash if you want to examine it as history and science. It makes no sense as a book of scientific truth. Not happy with it as is? Need to make it something different? ;)

In the grand scheme of things this attribute you have for looking young has to be counterbalanced with someone looking much older than their years. (It’s a universal law that is not understood well. :Wendywhatever: ) Just so you know, there is a man in New Hampshire who has never been carded in his life when buying alcohol, even when he was 21 years old.

I hate you just a little bit. :close:

Very true.

I know friends to my kids who were under 18, and didn't get carded. And my son (21), is getting carded all the time.

Antagonist.......maybe not the scientific language we are familiar with. And again, if I should agree with you, then you need to get up on your stool and lecture to the heathen masses here.

Once and for all, the ark wasn't big enough to hold all those animals you Christian bastard.

We were taking up the carpet in the church today. They were debating whether to keep the plug in the floor located below the "table/altar".

I thought of mentioning the giant battery, but I think it would have been lost on them. Gives new meaning to "Ark of the Covenant".

If I were your big retarded brother, it would be here that I would hold you down and pass gas upon you.....that's what brothers do.

From what they said I would say the health issues were around the time of birth (meaning she should have died around that time or shortly afterward) and I think she had a tumor that "miraculously" disappeared early on as well. But they didn't elaborate much in that department. I also don't recall them ever hinting at dwarfism of any sort though they did say something like different parts of her body appeared to age differently. One thing I remember was she had different teeth (ie. some baby and some not) which is obviously an oddity for a pre-toddler (or someone who is supposedly of that rough age bracket). I believe they set her mental age at roughly 9 months to 1 year so, if accurate, then she is mentally retarded in relation to both her biologic and "appearance" ages.

I don't know what to make of her. She's quite the little oddity that's for certain. If she can't help in the overall anti-aging process then perhaps she can help with the appearance of aging? I realize that people call that vain but what the hell? I may be falling apart on the insides but I look fantastic...and without surgery. When people say "You look like you haven't aged a day" it won't be just some "nice" greeting but an actual fact. And you'll look great in your casket (if you decide to be buried). Lots of benefits here. Okay, a real one is that it may help with some age-ism in hiring and things like that too. If you look the same age as the other applicants and can do the work then you're set.

Do you still think that the ark of the covenant was a giant battery?

I never heard it was a giant battery. I have heard it was a giant capacitor. I even remember seeing some TV show a whole lot of years ago that claimed to have proved this and demonstrated the whole thing. They built a model of the ark and then "charged" it. Then it gave off the charge. Zap.

It was on some show that proved all those things. How a wind made the dry land across the Red Sea and all that. They blew something like a leaf blower at a little model and, wouldn't you know it, the water flew back and the little shelf of land appeared. When they turned it off the water went back and so the little army would have drowned. I have no idea how the little Israelites would have walked in winds like that but maybe the squishy mud would have kept them from blowing over?

It seemed darn convincing at the time. I mean it was the 70's or early 80's.
