millie999
From either statistics or personal experience, where can one live to minimize christian contact? I relocated to Dallas (from up north) 9 months ago, and this place is infested with christians. Churches on every corner like a Walgreens or Starbucks. Some of them actually flip ME the bird because THEY pulled out of church in front of me- imagine that! My Jewish aunt said Houston has an excess of christians too, and its hard for them living there. However, I heard that Austin seems to have less christians than any place I've ever lived. I am just trying to be around like-minded people and enjoy my next 60 years, since I might be going to hell when I die.
Vomit Comet
Las Vegas. Let me tell you, it earns the moniker "Sin City." It's one of the most godless spots in the country. The Mormons aside, although they only care about money and generally don't fuck with the rest of us. Also, the Pacific Northwest is as godless as it gets in this country. Seattle and Portland are in the Top 3 or 5 or so along with Las Vegas for most godless in country.
ShallowByThyGame
New England has some catholics and liberal protestants, but very few fundamentalists. I hear actually Old England is a very secular place.
luvless
Well I am out in California and LA or San Francisco are void of many Christians. We have pockets of Christian communities in the Central Valley and more inland in So Cal so you may want to avoid those areas.

millie999
I live in the Dallas area too, and yes, they are everywhere here!! Hi neighbor! It's crazy here--the suburbs like Plano are full of 'em. Where do you go in Dallas to find fellow non-believers?
Seeking
Hi neighbor! It's crazy here--the suburbs like Plano are full of 'em. Where do you go in Dallas to find fellow non-believers? Well, since I'm introverted and not big on making friends I haven't sought out any non-believers. These days, I'm just much more hyper-aware of all the Christian mumbo-jumbo coming from all the people around me.
HRDWarrior
I live in the San Francisco bay area, and the christians here are pretty easily avoided - sure, they're out there, but I can't say as though I have run ins with them - and I LOVE the area, so much to do whether you want the big city or completely wild nature, it's all within an easy drive. Farther north and east they may become more predominant, but not around here.
Vomit Comet
Well I am out in California and LA or San Francisco are void of many Christians. We have pockets of Christian communities in the Central Valley and more inland in So Cal so you may want to avoid those areas. I was born and raised in Los Angeles County. Certain suburbs--like the one I was in--were chock full of them, and in South Central the presence and influence of the black church is certainly there. Otherwise, the Christians were scattered far and wide and often had to drive 30 miles to go to church. Deeper into the city they were, for the most part, blissfully non-existent. Somebody who grew up in Hollywood (the area of town, not the movie industry) could spend their whole childhood and teenage years being only dimly aware of the existence of Christian fundamentalists. The thing about L.A. is that it's more suburb than city. It was once called "56 suburbs in search of a city." Also, I always had the impression that Orange County and San Diego were bursting at the seams with them. Southern Orange County is extremely Christian; you go into a gas station in the middle of the night and they're playing Michael W. Smith.
godlessgrrl
Seattle is pretty godless. Like any big city there are churches all over the place, but most people mind their own religious business and don't get in your face about it. If you simply like your religion more nontheist, there are several Buddhist temples in town. There are still one or two totally freaky churches in the area though. Mars Hill is one of ours. But then so is the Lusty Lady.
JustAnotherGuy
Unfortunately, the south is slap full of them. I would have to agree with Vomit Comet. Las Vegas is the way to go.
Vigile
I've lived in the Seattle area and I've lived in DC. If you really want to avoid xians, and especially fundies, the DC metro area has a lot less of them. Seattle and cities like Olympia, WA are very cool. Olympia has an annual day of celebration for evolution where thousands of people show up dressed in primal goo, dinosaurs, etc... but they also have fundies mixed in. In DC it's pretty hard to find a fundy unless you go deep into the black neighborhoods where you will find Baptists (but they don't appear to be the hard core fundy variety either). I saw a few Episcopal churches, but I think just old ladies or people with old money go. OTH, I'd say Seattle is a lot more fun. DC has better food and a higher level of overall education, but people there are for the most part too busy to have fun.

When I lived in Louisville, the atheists referred to the megachurch there as "Six Flags Over Jesus"- I think it has its own zip code. YUCK! Vomit Comet
Somebody who grew up in Hollywood I take that back. Last time I was there I spotted a Pentecostal church just off of the Sunset Strip. But it was a hole-in-the-wall storefront type place tucked away on a very small side street, and seemed to cater to Central American immigrants. Free_Wolf
I live in Vegas, and trust me, it's not as low in Christians as you think. In fact, I think I've seen more churches here then in Dayton, Ohio (where I used to live 5 years ago). But then again, maybe it depends on which part of town you go to. Plus there are a lot of Mexicans here (no offense meant), and the majority of them are Catholic.
Caretaker
If you are interested in a not-so-large city, I hear Corvallis, Oregon is rather unchurched. In fact, I think I heard somewhere that Benton County is the least-churched county in the US, although the nearby Albany and Lebanon are a bit on the fundy side. Lanakila
We have Mormons but I've only spotted one Baptist church since I moved here 4 years ago. I live in Missoula Mt, which is a small city of about 75,000.

I live near the University, and excluding the Mormon Church over by Trop/Eastern I can't think of more than three or four churches within five to six miles of my house. Vigile
Barstow, now that's a shit hole. At least that's the impression it left on us as we traveled through. It stood out as the worst city in the US after traveling 5k miles across the country.

At least the people who live there aren't crazy enough to commute all the way to L.A. like the people in Victorville are. Have you seen Yasha Levine's articles about life in Victorville? That'll give you a pretty good idea.

Southern Orange County is extremely Christian; you go into a gas station in the middle of the night and they're playing Michael W. Smith. I've spent time in both San Diego County and So. OC, and it's really not that bad. Where you have lots of money you usually find the "prosperity" Christian types, who are usually much more liberal and materialistic. With those people if it's between tithing or allocating money for botox, BMW car payment or greens fees, the tithes will probably wait...
