-I can go to Hollywood, New Orleans, etc without feeling like I am only there to witness. I got to go to Hollywood and

I'm from the inland hick part of L.A. County, and every so often they'd bus us down to Venice Beach to hassle the bums and stoners. 98% of the time we got hostility for it, and in hindsight I can empathize completely. I remember thinking "here we are getting cussed out and threatened by street punks when we could be chillin' on the beach instead."

I live in Las Vegas now, and these assholes with bullhorns and signs are all over the Strip on some nights. Fortunately we locals rarely go to the Strip, but it's always irritating to see it. One time I was walking down the Strip and some young eager beaver gets in my way and said "I know why you came here this weekend." I wanted to say "more like two years ago you asshole!!!"

I worked with Oasis of Hollywood and a Texas group called Jesus Crew.

Heard of em?

Never heard of Jesus Crew, but Oasis sounds pretty familiar. I'm pretty sure I've heard it mentioned a few times.

30. The feeling of Freedom - like a prisoner let free; or like a bird set free. A weight lifted off my shoulder. I could never have freedom. Now I feel free

Being able to listen to whatever music I want.

Being able to read any book I want.

Being able to watch any movie I want.

Being able to watch any TV show I want.

Thinking naughty thoughts and not having to worry about Jesus reading my mind.

Doing naughty things without having to worry about Jesus watching me

15. Being able to say out loud what I really am thinking about church doctrine, theology, apologetics and history without stifling it and keeping it to myself.

I know it's been mentioned, but I have to say I fuckin' love to swear, and I have no damn idea why, except that it's so hard to suppress myself all the time and "watch my mouth." I thought I was the only one, and that it was really immature of me. Glad to see I'm in good company. Sometimes a good cuss word expresses the exact magnitude of my feelings when I'm tired of playing nice.

Oh, thank you for this one! I've been trying to stop cussing lately because I felt that it was making me sound unintelligent. But damn, if I could have just about every other word be a "bad" one, I'd be pretty fuckin' ecstatic. I LOVE to cuss!!!!!!

-freedom to THINK

-the joy of asking questions like: why? how? who says? how do they know? ...and more...and then searching out the answers for myself rather than accepting the little pat answers of pastors/mentors/authors, etc.

-loving people freely, just because they're people

-enjoying the randomness of nature without having to praise god for it

-learning to give practical advice instead of ridiculous bible verses or the offer of useless prayer

-seeing the world with my own eyes

-not running myself ragged trying to "serve" at church, nor feeling guilty because I'm not doing so!

-as so many others have said...not feeling the need to evangelise perfect strangers. Plane trips will be so much more enjoyable now!!!

-learning to take some pride in my appearance

....i could go on and on. Thanks for this post! It IS encouraging!

Loving my neighbor, not because any god says I have to, but for who they are.

Not fearing hell

Not worrying that my "words fall to the ground" and wonder what exactly it means and why it's so bad anyway and not fearing the "unforgivable sin"

Being allowed to watch whatever I want without fear that I'm inviting evil spirits into my home

Not having to worry about how Noah got the dinosaurs on the ark without eating all the other animals before the flood :HaHa:

I know it's all been said before (probably) but I'll add my two cents... I love that I can get drunk on the weekends, masturbate and think of whatever I want while doing it, that I can gossip, and that I can turn on my computer and see a sexy picture of a girl, even though I'm a girl, on the desktop! :)

  • Embracing sleep paralysis hallucinations as my brain’s wonderful, natural way of sorting out the day…instead of thinking they are demonic and being terrified
  • My awesome, humongous tattoo…that didn’t hurt me or destroy any temples, thank you very much
  • Cracker Barrel on Sundays before noon
  • Being more empathetic
  • Godsdamnits (yes, you read that right, BSG fans) with impunity
  • Pantera all day every day
  • Guiltless, “impure” sex with Mr. Gypsy
  • Clickin’ mah own mouse when Mr. Gypsy is away…or in the next room…or in the same room

Sexual freedom! I can do what I want with who I now and I'm absolved of guilt from my "sins" of the past. I love being able to be randy when and with who I chose! :wicked:

Edit: Also love never feeling bad for being myself or horror and guilt at those blasphemous thoughts that seem to pop up when I'm trying to pray. I love never having to submit myself to or change myself for anyone!

I'll second that! I just wonder if you're as naughty as I am. :wicked:

Being able to wake up and not have to prepare myself for the possiblity that today might bring Armegeddon or fulfillment of the "prophecies" of Revelations.

Identifying my own, consistent standards of right and wrong.

Not having to forgive everyone for everything (even though I'll still forgive almost everyone for most things).

And add me to the list of people who love to swear. Profanity - it's your route to being taken seriously!

Sex. That alone is worth it.

And not having to second guess my actions anymore (Do I want to do it or does God want me to do it? Do I have a sinful or pure motive?) but just doing what I think is best.

All the same stuff.

The disappearance of all the cognitive dissonance.

Being able to accept and be friends with my gay neighbors, and I mean really accept and be friends with them, not just be friends with them to show them the error of their ways and convert them.

Sunday mornings are a whole lot easier. Usually dog park. But sometimes nothing at all, and even my domesticated wolf doesn't notice because she doesn't understand days of the week.

Swearing, within the right context, usually just for fun.

Can actually listen to the views of others, and wonder if they might be right since I don't know in advance that they must be wrong.

Don't have to make sense of a book the transparently makes no sense.

As said several posts ago, sleep hypnosis: natural and no longer terrifying. (though admittedly sometimes a bit scary).

Personal use of porn is now a negotiated matter between myself and my super hot trophy wife, and not just outright wrong and the source of guilt.

Can give my money to something that clearly benefits others.

Don't have to indoctronate my children, or teach them to be afraid of everyone else and their ideas.

Get to live in reality.

No longer threatened by reality.

Free.

Have to add another one.

Not having to be "concerned" by the ever shifting views of just about everyone I know, whether local people, or leaders I follow, or more visible national leaders and theologians and ever scrutinize whether they are becoming heretical.

Getting to decide whether my local leaders, or governors, or the president of the US and congress are making good decisions and/or bad decisions and not having to think they are of the devil because they aren't super conservative (ie, the culture of the present evangelical church).

Being able to laugh my ass off at christian parodies. Yes, I used to laugh, but not quite to the point my ass fell off, because I also felt a little guilty and it produced painful cognitive dissonance.

Don't have to be scared of public schools.

Can just live, not being tied to some specific dogma and ancient myth.

Motives, don't have to worry whether my motives are always Godly, though I admit I didn't struggle with that the last five or so years even when I was still a true believer because I knew that was to much to ask.
