Stories have been passed from generation to generation for thousands upon thousands of years, the bible is hearsay, the qu'ran is hearsay, all holy books are hearsay, greek mythology is hearsay...because at one time or another and still, some people believed/believe all of those STORIES to be TRUE.  Same with legends and other STORIES.  They are just elaborate stories made up by creative and sometimes what I perceive evil-minded people. Or they can be TALL TALES about a particular person or people (legends).
