RankStranger Posted October 17, 2010 Share Posted October 17, 2010 I have a good friend- a hard-core Baptist who I've known since second grade- who believes that the earth is at the center of the universe. But it's because he listened to some speech by some fundy physicist who claimed that if the earth was at the center of mass of the universe, then time HERE would be effectively slowed down due to relativity... which allows the earth to be 6000 years old while the rest of the universe is much older. If we were at the center of the universe, we would have already been destroyed by a super-massive black hole...or, perhaps we did and this side is the twilight zone. Is it at the farthest point (apoapsis/apehelion) or the closest point (periapsis/perihelion)? And since our solar system is on a while chase in high speed through our galaxy, is the Universe moving along, but not any other star? All stars, galaxies, and black holes are rotating in some odd curve pattern to create the illusion of us moving through space? Crazy... But on the other hand, because the universe is expanding equally in all direction at once, any point actually do seem to be the center point of the Universe. It's an illusion of space-expansion.
