Canonization In The News?

I am amazed that with the declining Roman Catholic population that our local and national news consider the Canonization of Pope Paul II newsworthy. Even more laughable is when they describe the process, which is utterly batshit crazy. Step one- This person of god- lives their entire life doing god's work... Step Two- Said person dies and "goes to heaven". Step Three- Said person goes through the Beatification process. Someone has to come forward and say that they prayed to this dead guy and were miraculously healed or some other "miracle". After that other people can pray for this dead guy to go to god for them to answer their prayers... THEN if there is a second miracle then they can finally Step Four be Canonized.... Sainthood...LOTS of jumping through godly hoops for that honor when you are dead... Suffice to say this sounds INSANE to everyone listening to the news except for a handful of Roman Catholics. Anyone who is NOT Christian it's crazy and all the other denominations of Christianity are rolling their holy eyes too... How is this news?

If this isn't bad enough- here in Western New York there is another man Father Baker who is vying for the Sainthood as well. The recent article in our paper: http://www.buffalonews.com/city/article312651.ece

None of this is in their BIBLE- it is the brainchild of some 4th century martyr worshiping fool. I can't believe that the advanced society of today, has a news reporter spewing this foolishness with a straight face and a "isn't that wonderful?" smile pasted on their face. Is it even possible that 5% of the total population buys this dogma? Catholics are 25% of the religious and Protestants 51% in the USA.

It really is time to enter into dialogs with your friends and loved ones about what it is they believe. I have no friends and relatives who attend church on a regular basis. I wonder if they just very informally checked out with no need to formally make an announcement. I just think most everyone I know is at least Agnostic... if not Atheist. I think we are in good company, but not as private as the rest! Just a thought!

I was thinking "why don't we described other superstitious rituals as news?"

It was huge news in Italy, that's for sure, even though Italians are the least religious people in western Europe if you measure things like actual church attendance and whatnot. Imagine some tough guy named Bruno, fighting back tears of joy because the Pope passed within 200 yards of where he was standing. And then the next night he does a bunch of coke and bones two chicks at once.
