Hillsong Conference Taking Over My Town

I didn't realize how pissed off I was at the church until last night wandering around Sydney for a casual bit of dinner with my wife. The city is teaming with my ex brethren for the Hillsong Conference.

Two things I heard that made me laugh.

1) I saw this young trendy guy walking past with a young trendy girl. He was walking just behind her and clearly stairing at her arse the whole time and he says ".. The message only goes for about 20 minutes.. The rest if the time it's kinda like a pumpin' club with everyone dancing and stuff.. " I was trying to work out what he meant when I saw his delegate badge.

I wanted to grab the poor girl and tell her to get away from this freak now.

2) I was in a public restroom, and I shit you not, this guy in a stall says to his mate in the stall next to him ".. Did you FEEL him in that last session.. I did and I started crying.." the other guys like "what? Dude.. I'm taking a dump.. What are you talking about.." The First guy sticks his head up and looks in the other stall and says "oh sorry dude.. Thought you were someone else.." .. Dick Head was wearing a Hillsong tshirt lol.

Far out.. I moved to Sydney CBD to get away from Hillsong and it's 'associated' churches lol.

Any Sydney-siders here?

Personally Hillsong was one of my favorite christian bands, because they made the most "authentic" and "moving" worship music. It was also a lot of fun to play bass to.

I found Hillsong's music as mundane as the rest of them. The only one that maybe have stood out as "exceptional" was MW Smith.

But when in P&W, one's standards for excellence diminishes.

I'm from Canberra but I will be in Sydney on Saturday. Please tell me they won't be round Hornsby witnessing in the Mall. I couldn't stand two Saturdays in a row of god botherers!

There isn't a container in the world big enough to hold all the vomit that Hill$ong inspires in me. Im in Wagga but close enough for my christian friends to spew how wonderful this will be for the last two weeks and again for at least another three after its over.

I had dinner with christians on the weekend and they were discussing how warped and twisted and evil lady gaga is. I asked them why they weren't horrified by christians who clearly love money and status over god. Bit of a conversation killer but they got the message. Wonder how long they will stay friends??

I feel for ya. Stay home and watch porn :)

The stories in the OP are hillarious. I always disliked all popular worship pop music. I live next to a football stadium and there was a Jehovas Witness convention there a couple of years ago and found it scary as I had to walk along with their crowd to get down the road and I thought wow, If they figure out I'm not one of them...I mean there were hundreds of them all around me on a huge street, they may have crowded me to convert me. I kept dreading one of them would say "so how did you find the convention brother" and I would have to say "yeah, real heavy stuff man" and bluff my way out. :o

Other than the cd's and poor renditions of hillsongs my only encounter with them was at a church in NI where a guy from hillsong churches came over for a 'mission'. He put me off considerably. I too would want to get away from it all.

The worst thing is that I have been one of those people stalking poor innocent bystanders in the city streets trying to get them to come along to a 'big event'. ugh.gif

A friend wanted me to have a Hillsong video, but being the upstanding Christian man I was at the time, I paused the video for her to show Darlene with a look of ecstasy on her face and said "To me, that's not worship, that's porn."

Damn, I'm glad that I am out of that mindset forever!

But I ate up the music when I was in the church, except that amateurs in music ministry would try to copy the free-form singing at the end of some songs and it came out as just hollering. Not fun.

I think Chaser summed it up nicely:
