In all seriousness, though, it sounds to me like a condition caused by nerves.

Indeed. It's not uncommon that anxiety over a new situation brings strange physical symptoms and sleep problems.

Nope, repeatedly waking up not breathing and gasping for air is a classic sign of the physical condition known as sleep apnea.

Nope, she said it also happened when she wasn't sleeping. wink.png

Doesn't mean she doesn't have sleep apnea.  People can have that and awake hypoventiliation syndrome or anxiety-related breathing issues.  Being jolted awake out of sleep is not caused by anxiety.

I told her that whatever it is, she needs to get it checked out by a doctor, because the ramifications could be lethal. She swears to God it's the Devil. Her friends responded:

1 - Melatonin supplements

1 - Punch the Devil in the ribs

1 - "Praying for you" or its equivalent

1 - Herbal tea

1 - Relax

1 - Trust God to take care of it

1 - It was a panic attack

1 - It wasn't a panic attack, it was the Devil

1 - Go see a doctor (I said that)

All except for the last one are equally ineffective for sleep apnea.  Herbal tea?  Lol.

Good on you for suggesting a doctor though.

I have a friend with sleep apnea. There's a reason he stays away from driving at certain times. He also doesn't climb ladders or handle chainsaws.

Nobody here said that there can't also be sleep apnea going on. However, sleep apnea requires that the person be asleep, and therefore it cannot account for breathing issues when one is not sleeping. She said it's not normal for her, and it is coinciding with a job change, so it definitely sounds like there's some nervousness going on. That's all I'm saying.

They forgot :

Don't stop breathing.

I love that kind of helpful advice. Don't forget to breathe!

Sorry, I'm bitter right now.

These remedies are great replacements for blood transfusions and measles vaccines also. :-) /sarcasm

Actually a doctor and a CPAP device cured sleep apnea in someone I know.

You've been there, too, huh? All I remember is the white van, then my ass hurt when I woke up in the park the next morning.
