silentknight
Also, I recently posted an article to facebook about the psychology of groups and how we naturally see outsiders as the enemy. The idea behind posting it was to try to bring people closer together, if they realize the other political side isn't "evil". Here's the article: http://youarenotsosmart.com/2011/08/21/the-illusion-of-asymmetric-insight/ And unfortunately, here's the reply:

That's my mom. I got her a kindle fire for her birthday. When she's trying to type quickly on it.. well... bad things happen. Unfortunately, ever since getting her that kindle, she's been using it to read craziness on the internet. Her facebook is now constantly filled with links to articles of the most extreme right wing sort. :\

Moderator TrueFreedom Posted October 23, 2012 Moderator Share Posted October 23, 2012 This is so empathetic and profound: "A comment from a friend who was actually repeating something her son said. Yes, but it's arrogantly implying that all atheists go to hell, where they come to believe in the God who sent them there to be tortured.

silentknight
A friend posted the following story to facebook: An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all). After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. It could not be any simpler than that. Remember, there IS a test coming up. The 2012 elections. These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment: 1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. 2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. 3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. 4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it! 5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation. Now, whether or not points of the story are accurate about socialism, several things bother me. For one, it's fictional. Second, it doesn't really investigate the matters of socialism, it investigates a stereotype. And third, Obama isn't turning our country into a completely socialist one. I replied with: "Nice story, bro: http://www.snopes.com/college/exam/socialism.asp"

If everyone in the world went to college, studied and worked their ass off and got all As, most of those would still end up working in low wage jobs because there are simply more low wage than high wage jobs. Fuck some people are fucking stupid.
freeasabird
More battered spouse syndrome just showed up in my feed: I've been thinking about entitlement and deserving something a little over the past few days. We live in a culture that feels like it deserves something. I've heard the phrase, "You deserve it." And I've actually seen people get upset if they didn't get what they thought they deserved. Have we ever thought about what we really deserve though. The Bible is clear that what we really deserve is death and separation from God. Yet God's mercy us so great that every day He doesn't give us what we deserve. Instead He invites us into His presence to get what we don't deserve...His grace, mercy, guidance, and a whole lot more. God, thank you for not giving me what I truly deserve. And thank you for giving me what I don't deserve.

Yeah, nothing like a "loving" God to constantly remind us that what we really deserve is to die and burn in hell forever. All of us, every single one. antix
It pisses me off that truly good, compassionate people are told they are worthless rags and deserve infinite torture. I would like to give Kudos to one of my best friends. He goes to church occasionally (for the kids), but is not religious himself. He is also the most giving, generous person on the planet. Through the church, he runs a summer mission program for a week that goes to very poor areas of appalachia and fixes houses, plumbing, carpentry etc. He does that because that is what he does. He does not do it for the Lord or to impress others.
