Things Fundies Say On Facebook

It pisses me off that truly good, compassionate people are told they are worthless rags and deserve infinite torture.

I would like to give Kudos to one of my best friends. He goes to church occasionally (for the kids), but is not religious himself. He is also the most giving, generous person on the planet. Through the church, he runs a summer mission program for a week that goes to very poor areas of appalachia and fixes houses, plumbing, carpentry etc. He does that because that is what he does. He does not do it for the Lord or to impress others.

I do not know if he an athiest. More of an apathetic. I know someone else very highly educated who says the same thing: if he exists, he exists, if he does not, he does not, I could care less.

Last night Andy discovered our refrigerator was not working and probably had mot been for many hours considering the temp. I was really bummed for multiple reasons, but I sat down on the kitchen floor and prayed that God would start the fridge. 5 minutes into my prayer the refrigerator started humming. I sat there a few more min continuing to pray that God would fix it and praising Him for listening and caring.

I woke this morning to what seems to be a fixed and working refrigerator. God cares about us friends! Even the small things like our conveniently cold food. He answers our prayers!

So I encourage you to pray today! He is powerful and He wants to hear from you.

And don't take your fridge for granted today...I won't be!

Another gem from a fb friend of mine. I'm so tempted to say something smartass, but I won't.

I don't have that much self-control. I would have pointed out that while she was praying for her machine to live several people died of starvation.

A friend posted the following story to facebook:

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. It could not be any simpler than that. Remember, there IS a test coming up. The 2012 elections.

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Now, whether or not points of the story are accurate about socialism, several things bother me. For one, it's fictional. Second, it doesn't really investigate the matters of socialism, it investigates a stereotype. And third, Obama isn't turning our country into a completely socialist one.

I replied with:

"Nice story, bro:

http://www.snopes.co...m/socialism.asp"

Nothing annoys me worse than when someone starts this socialist BS. Almost no one in Washington wants socialism (except for Bernard Sanders), Obama isn't a socialist, he's pretty damn pro capitalist his health care program is the complete opposite of Socialism, we don't even get a government option. Its about the same as requiring everyone to have car insurance but because health insurance is so insanely expensive the poor get subsidies.

In any case at most we're a socialistic capitalistic society and all modern societies are this way, we have socialized education, roads, police, etc and frankly I think there are some things which shouldn't be going to the highest bidder.

Sounds like fortune telling to me. "This WILL occur unless Obama goes away." It's an oversimplification with static rules and fixed structure. Society is a complex situation with ever-changing rules and structure.

Time to just list the stupid:

I normally believe that there should be a separation between church and state. This is not a normal period of time for our country for this. I believe that all christians (those who believe in Jesus Christ) need to stand up for this country in it's time of need. Our country is voting in less than a week and a half for who is BEST to run OUR country. Please pray and then vote. It is that CRUCIAL!

and

This is a very long read but do read it all.... BTW it is sad so have the tissues ready....

I saw a cashier hand a little boy his money back at the mall, the boy couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 years old. The Cashier said, 'I'm sorry, but you don't have enough money to buy this doll.'' The little boy turned to the old woman next to him, ''Granny, are you sure I don't have enough money?'' She replied, ''You know that you don't have enough money to buy this doll, my dear.'' Then she asked him to stay there for just 5 minutes while she went to look around. She left quickly. The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand. Finally, I walked toward him and I asked him who he wished to give this doll to. 'It's the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for Christmas. She was sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her.' I replied to him that maybe Santa Claus would bring it to her after all, and not to worry. But he replied to me sadly. 'No, Santa Claus can't bring it to her where she is now. I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there.' His eyes were so sad while saying this, 'My Sister has gone to be with God. Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister.'' My heart nearly stopped. The little boy looked up at me and said, 'I told daddy to tell mommy not to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the mall.' Then he showed me a very nice photo of himself. He was laughing. He then told me 'I want mommy to take my picture with her so she won't forget me.' 'I love my mommy and I wish she didn't have to leave me, but daddy says that she has to go to be with my little sister.' Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly. I quickly reached for my wallet and said to the boy. 'Suppose we check again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll!'' OK' he said, 'I hope I do have enough.' I added some of my money to his without him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the doll and even some spare money. The little boy said, 'Thank you God for giving me enough money!' Then he looked at me and added, 'I asked last night before I went to sleep for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that mommy could give it to my sister. He heard me!'' 'I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but I didn't dare to ask God for too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose.'' 'My mommy loves white roses.' A few minutes later, the old lady returned and I left with my basket. I finished my shopping in a totally different state of mind from when I started. I couldn't get the little boy out of my mind. Then I remembered a local newspaper article two days ago, which mentioned a drunk man in a truck, who hit a car occupied by a young woman and a little girl. The little girl died right away and the mother was left in a critical state. The family had to decide whether to pull the plug on the life-sustaining machine because the young woman would not be able to recover from the coma. Was this the family of the little boy? Two days after this encounter with the little boy I read in the newspaper that the young woman had passed away. I couldn't stop myself as I bought a bunch of white roses and I went to the funeral home where the body of the young woman was for people to see and make last wishes before her burial. She was there, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white rose in her hand with the photo of the little boy and the doll placed over her chest. I left the place, teary-eyed, feeling that my life had been changed forever. The love that the little boy had for his mother and his sister is still, to this day, hard to imagine, and in a fraction of a second, a drunk driver had taken all this away from him. Now you have 2 choices: (1) Copy & Paste this on your wall(: (2) Ignore it as if it never touched you!!

and

You're worth it. You can't earn it. The cross has proven that you're sacred and blameless. Your life has purpose. You are more than flesh and bone. Can't you see, you're something beautiful? Yes, you got to believe. He wants you to see that you're not just some wandering soul that can't be seen and can't be known. You got to believe that you are someone worth dying for.

Yeah, can I throw up now? I've gotten rid of everyone on my friends list who posts shit like that. The last one left actually got rid of me. She was the sister of one of my best friends and she's just dumb as a box of rocks. I stated my opinion on something political a couple of weeks ago and she took issue with it and told me I was "disrespecting her". So I pushed it, hoping she would drop me and she did. Before that it was my own sister who posted a link to a fund drive for my neice's Christian school. I told her I would donate to the Christian school if she would donate to an LGBT organization. She blocked me. GONZ9729CustomImage1539775.gif

I think I'd like to puke too, please. That read like a poorly done Chicken Soup for the Soul reject.

Nonsense written to suspend critical thinking and incite an emotional response. I like how the writer or re-poster orders you to have an emotional reaction (it's so sad...have the tissues ready!) Really?

That was actually my emotional response. Not tissues (lol) but..."Really?"

Let's recap this. Granny brings the little boy to the store, while Mommy is dying in the hospital, to let him try to buy something she knows he can't afford, having the cashier turn him down. The next heart-rending twist is of course it's for his dead sister. So...Granny doesn't help him herself but instead leaves him there by himself - with a stranger apparently - while she 'quickly leaves' to go 'look around'? Is Granny a dim bulb in the marquee of life? I hear Deliverance banjos.

I have sobs all right. Not of tears, but the dry heaves. I think I need to choose option (2) and ignore it as if it never touched me!

This story has made the rounds but when you ask where was god to stop the drunk driver?*crickets*

The sad thing is the kid is so indoctrinated that he does not even have the normal sense of loss or mourning. That is the sad part of the story.

Gawd. I want to say something but where do I begin?

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked" (Gal. 6:7). Is it only a matter of time before what you are doing crashes in on you?”

Do I comment on:

  1. The fear mongering and induction of paranoia?
  2. The role of confirmation bias?
  3. That even scripture says that good things and bad things happen indiscriminately to both good and bad people?
  4. That this view is simply crazy-making?

Gawd. I think I'll just ignore it.

I would begin by mocking God. Next I would point out that Gal 6:7 is a perfect example of how the Bible is wrong about many things.

If you haven't already, do your duty today and vote. And then, don't be fearful; God remains supreme ruler. Be kind, respectful and honor your leaders and, most importantly, pray for them daily that they will seek God's wisdom as they lead us.

Gag! If the "good Christian men" of the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution had abided we would still be living in a British colony, subject to the King of England...

No.

Many other former colonies didn't require a war to break free. Ironically, it was probably the Revolutionary war that was the beginning of the end of the british empire.

My point was we would not be colonies now should the as you said "the good Christian Men off boston" not revolted. The colonial period began its decline with the end of WWI. and finally died after WWII though for some stupid reason the British still tried to hold on to India, but not for very long. It was a system which was going to eventually collapse. It didn't require a revolution.
