I never can understand peoples logic in wanting to have so many children. The part of Va. I live in has seen a rise in teen and single mother pregnancys in just the last few years and most of it is to get more money for food stamps (or WIC). People don't believe me when I tell them this, but I am neighbors to some and they brag about it.

I know this is a little off subject but I read this article last week and it made me sick.

What some people will do just to collect more government money and not work. Pathetic!

On that subject:

Teen Pregnancy Costs State Nearly $155 Million In A Year

Lawmakers in Mississippi haven't responded to pressure from groups pushing for comprehensive sex education, so health advocates put the problem into terms they could understand. In addition to the tremendous emotional and financial costs for teens who get pregnant, a new analysis found that these young parents cost the state $154.9 million in 2009. Yet, officials still say teaching kids about contraception should be optional.

I heard about this family the other day. 18 kids and expecting with no health insurance. I don't know that trimming trees, in TN, can be lucrative enough to cover the expenses.

The world has seven billion people with the last billion in less than twelve years, and that figure may double in the next sixty or seventy years and the old virgin in a frock in the vati-can keeps on about families must have more babies.

Yep. That's the problem with exponential growth. At the current population increase rate of 1.3% per annum, if this rate remains, in 780 years, people will have on average 1 square meter each to live on the dry surface of the land. Clearly this can't continue.

  • 3 weeks later...

I teach biology to home school students, some of whom come from evangelical (not precisely "fundamentalist') backgrounds. The very idea that any of the girls in my classes would be told that science was off-limits to them, that they could not pursue a career in the sciences because their primary responsibility in life was to make babies, fills me with loathing. So many bright, inquisitive young ladies, shackled to a life they didn't ask for. This phenomenon of the older children (particularly the girls) winding up as assistant caretakers to the ever-growing family is something that I've seen before, and many of them, I believe, grow up resenting it.

Thankfully, the majority of people in the church don't embrace this philosophy, but it's no less pernicious for being relatively scarce.
