BrotherJosh
Interesting article... Our species may have bred with a now extinct lineage of humanity before leaving Africa, scientists say.Although we modern humans are now the only surviving lineage of humanity, others once roamed the Earth, making their way out of Africa before our species did, including the familiar Neanderthals in West Asia and Europe and the newfound Denisovans in East Asia. Genetic analysis of fossils of these extinct lineages has revealed they once interbred with modern humans, unions that may have endowed our lineage with mutations that protected them as we began expanding across the world about 65,000 years ago. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44400953/ns/technology_and_science-science/

andyjj
There were giants on the earth in those days.... I think they all died out too long ago to leave even trace folk memories. No mention of the hobbits (Homo Floriensis) though.

Vigile
Sometimes you can't tell the difference between male and female Australopithicenes and you have to pull a Crocodile Dundee to be sure.
Kaiser01
big hairy neandrathals get me going!!! i think it is a extremly cool to think that homosapians shared the planet at one point with other species of humans and interacted with each other. i read a book once with a introduction based of a story like this. Dagan
I watched Nova's "Becoming Human" documentary series recently, I highly recommend it. The series touched on this and pointed out how Neanderthals were essentially an evolutionary dead end. Perfectly suited to surviving in the harsh cold ice age world (they lasted far longer than our species has) but once the glaciers started melting they were out-competed by the Homo Sapiens, who were better adapted to change and also seem to grow in population size a lot quicker. Of course there was time for some Neanderthal nookie before they all disappeared...
