Why Leftism Makes Me Angry

Alright, let's try this again. I will keep reshaping the question until I get an answer in return instead of more questions.

Good professors, I am educated in mathematics and I have an intense interest in studying societies. I am hoping to apply the understanding that I gain on bringing America closer to the ideal of freedom, prosperity and unity. Would you mind if I spend some time with you and ask you some questions?

How do you think that would fly?

Thank you for your words of encouragment Positivist. And thank you for not insulting me.

Chris, I'm not trying to be an asshole over here. I'm just having an extremely difficult time believing that you don't understand the question I've posed.

I think that's called getting an interdisciplinary graduate degree. I would be thrilled to have you walk into my office and say this. My goodness, I just love ideas and I love BIG ideas (like yours). I have helped numerous individuals with seemingly disparate ideas bring them together, but it does take time and the ability to master one area while developing the other. I live for discussions like this. (I like to think that I can help the 'little guy' with 'big ideas' get them over the proverbial net!)

If you are done your mathematics undergraduate degree, apply for an interdisciplinary masters program. Make sure you are well-read enough in sociology. They will want to make sure you know what you're talking about.

If you are not yet done your mathematics degree, keep taking that and take some sociology (and maybe economics) courses. Then, it's a shoe-in for that interdisciplinary masters.

An interdisciplinary graduate degree is the perfect forum to express novel ideas, again, building on what you've already got in your substantive areas (mathematics, sociology, and maybe economics) but steering it in a novel and unique direction. The world needs this.

My 1.2 cents.

Being vague and dodgy is not proving anything to anyone. Accusing people of insulting you follows the classic so-called "conservative" cop out of help-I'm-being-persecuted. There is only one person insulting you, one person persecuting you and one person holding you back.

Come one...you want society to "be free" and all that?? You probably want to foist the old Milton Friedman, Von Mises, Ayn Rand, Free-market schlock on everyone because it is your perceived theology. Never mind that this track has been tried and failed ad nauseum and there is no proof that so-called conservatism benefits anyone but a small elite.

America has suffered under so-called conservative sociology for over a generation. There are plenty of conservative thinkers who had a free hand to unload their philosophy all over the American landscape during that time. Problem is that they failed utterly and miserably to help society, establish freedom and liberty or anything else except fat bank accounts for corporate America and a landscape of poverty, endless war, abrogation of the constitution and devastation.

You want contemporary conservative sociologists? Look no further than Grover Norquist, Francis Fukiyama, Tom Fiedman, David Brooks, David Stockman or James Watt. By all facts on the ground and historical data they are total failures and frauds. And you want to foist these losers and their religion of failure on your local sociology department? No surprise that you'd get the cold shoulder from anyone who takes their discipline more seriously than a Fox News commercial or New York Post ad.

Get off your keister and go read Hegel, Heidegger, Adorno, Frued, Marx, Proudhon, Godwin, Camus, Sartre, Genet, Fanon, Chomsky and James Baldwin. Then come back and tell us all exactly and precisely what is wrong with their arguments and why. Is that too much homework? Sorry friend, that attitude will get you less than a D- in my class. If you are unwilling to do that and just want to sling mud in the title of your thread then you'd better go and ask somebody, my friend.

Using this forum to prop up the political agenda of the Republican party serious detracts from its quality and usefulness.

I wasn't trying to provide to you. If I had been trying to do that then I would have succeeded. I was expressing something in this thread. I "pushed" against the world with my voice. And the good world answered back mainly through Positivist. I was trying to gain here for myself. And I succeeded at that.

As new adjunct professor in economics, I have no problem with people expressing differing opinions. However, when it comes to the material you have to be able to justify your opinions based on the evidence and how the system works.

For example in Keynesian economics, if the country is in recession or depression and the cause is decreased consumption, then you need to increase spending. Most times that is interperted as the government spending more money. That is one way to do it. Another is by cutting taxes. A third option is to do both in such manner that the budject remains "balanced".

So is the left right the government should spend more....yes. Is the GOP right in cutting taxes....yes. Should we be worried about deficits right now....only in getting things balance by equal measure. Just focusing on cutting 12% of the budjet is not going to do it. Everything has to be on the table from defense to entitlements to government hiring. All taxes should be on the table, too.

Econonmicly this deadlock in congress is going to sink the economy faster then doing the wrong thing.

Edit: the point is if I asked you to write a paper and all that was written was how wrong on side was without theorical justification, then they would fail. My opinion is even if the professor disagrees with you, if you can justify your arguement with data or theroy and data then they can't fault you.

There are many possibilities ahead. I doubt that I will spend too much time kicking Leftist authoritarian's asses. I would much rather be constructive than polemical.

based on the current political situation we could use more constructive on both sides.

Watch and see how constructive Obama is this election cycle. Here's my prediction. Could be accurate, could be millions and trillions of miles off the mark.

He will sow divisions in this country at every opportunity. And even if he is re-elected the process of getting there will render the nation nearly ungovernable.

the nation is already headed that way.

The tea party is pulling the GOP hard right. The occupy movement will pull hard left. The House will quibble and bicker while the Senate wrings its hands because nobody has 60.

There is too much worry about winning and losing and not enough about everyone else. When people get fed up, revolutions happen.

The tea party is pulling the GOP hard right.

You see it that way? I think of hard right as theocracy. Anyway, I think Washington and the media are trying to pull the GOP towards the center.

The occupy movement will pull hard left.

You see them as hard Left? I'm not quite sure what to make of them. Ineffectual crybabies seems to me. Anyway, Obama said that the OWS "movement" was why he ran for office.

The only think I think is for certain is that 2012 is going to be "messy".

Russia, China and the whole Fertile Cresent to India will probalby be worse.

Most of Africa hasn't improved much in 100 years it seems unlikely they could get worse.

My persian friend managed to get her family out legaly to the US. She stated things are just to dangerous interally anymore. I feel Iran is going to collapse in on itself with fighting between pro president forces and pro-atollyah forces.

There's no perhaps about it. The technology is being developed and built. That's a fact.

Your additional anecdotal evidence that a revolution may thwarth the effort is the "perhaps".

Legion,

I think you'll find it's perfectly possible to hold a divergent viewpoint from a professor/tutor so long as your work has the required academic rigour. Same as in the 'hard' sciences your work needs to prove that you're well grounded in what the competing theories may be, what the current points of debate/discussions in peer review may be as well as your analysis and critique. As long as you approach your subject the same as any other science, you will pass well.

Being somewhat 'ornery in nature can actually help you do better than other students who just go along to get along. I'll give you an example from my dim distant past. A 4th year Organisational Culture subject I did was presented by a Prof who basically had written his own textbook and his lectures were going through each chapter in the book. Why bother, right? I also drew the short straw in tutorial group allocation and got him as my tute leader as well where we discussed (surprise, surprise) each chapter of the text book. A mate and I didn't exactly agree with the perspective in said text and given the dude was really a dick and treating it like a 1st year subject, we did masses of research each week and set about deconstructing the thing chapter by chapter in the tute group, lol. He pretty much ended up hating the both of us, went through all kinds of machinations to avoid allowing us airspace. When it came down to assessment though, we got very good grades simply because we ended up knowing the subject inside out and upside down just to get the dude's goat, LOL.

Right vs. Left -- The Jacobin Socialists sat on the left in the French parliament house, and the King-loving, boot-licking, sell-your-granny for a farthing royalist defenders of the corrupt and incompetent let-them-eat-cake inbred Monarchy sat on the right. In 9 generations, as far as I can see, ain't much changed. Then please tell us mathematically great rightist how your superior sociological philosophy is going to bring us all unity, prosperity, freedom, integrity and peace.

Wester do you really think such words affect me? I am finding peace. I know who I am and what I'm after.

I am supremely confident. Indeed I am arrogant. And I don't mind that you are arrogant too.

So far you have backed up and provided support for exactly none of your claims or assertions - which really says quite a bit about who you are and what you might be after, and why what happened to you transpired.

Now - since this thread transparently poses a political opinion and has nothing to do with religion, ex-christianity or deconversion, can I start posting any rant on any particular topic - like say the need for gender equality, the need to raise taxes to 1950s Eisenhower levels, how the Occupy people are actually quite conservative, the need for more workers to unionize, how and why banks are being attacked all over the planet, how Native Americans need greater representation in white American's conscience, how the war on drugs and the Nixon-Reagan bots who foisted it on us are frauds, how the Palmer raids sucked ....etc..etc... I mean is this the forum in which I can post these kinds of political ideas? If so please let me know because I will be glad to take it over entirely in favor of the hated Jacobins rather than put up with this unsupported right-wing delirium.

I feel no need to justify myself to you Wester. I just don't feel it. Now maybe if you had approached me with some respect, and asked me to spell out what I'm driving at here then I would have done so. But you have no desire to see that I grow. You don't want the best for me. So why in the fuck should I let you inside?

Okay.......

While I am no fan of the right, I try, and sometimes fail miserable, at civility.

this is the Rants and replies section. If you wish to start a topic about why the right pisses you off by all means do it. If you want to bitch about the Mormons showing up at your door, do it. If you want to hijack a thread and take it off the topic it was about, please don't.

So far you have done exactly what you accuse Legion of doing. You have provided no rebuttal on why the right is wrong.

I gave an example of how both have valid arguments in economics and as a professor I approach those with differing views.

I state the same right back at you. Where is you're evidence that the academia is not left leaning? How would you propose dealing with the situation where you have to toe a line you disagree with to get the grade?
