Googledotman
I was just on Facebook and one woman was posting this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI7oa_e9Org Basically, an armed robber comes into her store and tries to rob her. She tells the robber to leave the store "in Jesus name" and "binds [him] with the holy ghost". Why in the F*** would he be scared of her? After all the robber did have a gun. Jenkies! mymistake
Was it a real gun or was it a bluff? Sometimes robbers have fake guns. Sometimes robbers don't actually have the guts to kill someone or don't want to add murder to their rap sheet. Still, it's stupid to bet your life on a magic spell. "I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udun! Go back to the shadow. You shall not pass!" Indiana Jones would just shoot you. Foxy Methoxy
There were people who did something similar at Columbine, too. They got shot.
R. S. Martin
Some robbers depend on their victims being scared. This woman did more than pray. She stood up to the man with authority, believing in the depth of her being that things would go her way. Religion was her tool, but I would say it was her innate confidence and personal stamina that "bound" the would-be robber. She looks to me like a woman who is used to giving orders to bigger and stronger people--probably men as a rule--and who is used to being complied with. I would guess her customers know they can rely on her and that her workers do their best not to get in cross-wise with her. Superstitious and scared robbers, apparently, won't harass her either. I don't think we're talking about Indiana Jones. I agree that this video may be dangerous in that it encourages people to pray rather than take practical measures to ensure their own safety.
Ouroboros
For every 100th failed attempt to scare a thief away with a magic curse, one seems to succeed.
SilentLoner
Maybe the robber was a religious guy? I'll let the irony of that sink in.
Super Moderator florduh Posted December 29, 2011 Super Moderator Share Posted December 29, 2011 Ruby nailed it. She was not intimidated, for whatever reason, and the would-be robber wasn't prepared to handle that. One expects people to submit to a loaded weapon. I wouldn't recommend that as a method of self defense, though. Most of the time people pointing guns are prepared to kill if necessary - and sometimes just for fun. mymistake
After watching that video the person I really felt sorry for was that poor customer. A masked guy comes in waving a gun. The store owner is insane. Now the guy with the gun is pissed and he points it right at the customer. Oh that poor lady. What did she do to deserve that? If you want to get yourself killed please don't do it when I'm around.
R. S. Martin
Maybe the robber was a religious guy? I'll let the irony of that sink in. I figure he was. That's what I meant by superstitious. The storekeeper's attitude along with aggressive religious language was just too much for him. That's my guess. But like Ouroboros and Florduh say, statistics do not point to prayer and religious curses as the most effective defense against armed robbery. This time it worked and the religious are probably going to milk this cow for all they can get out of it, totally disregarding all the psychological tools employed that had nothing to do with religion. I predict that more lives will be lost due to that video. How tragic.

Jessie
She's lucky. If he'd have been an atheist, she (or the customer) might have been killed or injured. In a robbery situation, it just isn't smart to do that shit, whether you believe it or not.
Vigile
Might work well as a niche marketing strategy too. I command you in the name of Jebus and the Holy Spook, buy Flabbercizer by Ronco!
midniterider
I command you to put the muthaf*ckin money in this here muthaf*ckin bag or you'll be havin a face-to-face with Jesus in about 5 seconds, biotch!

Is THAT why Christians hate atheists so much??? Their religious jargon doesn't "bind" atheists, huh? Well, then, I s'pose it's not all that true, right? Cracked
Most prisoners/criminals, do label themselves as religious. But this woman is insane. The criminal must have been a NOOB. I'm sure a veteran criminal would have made a different decision, something other than walking away empty handed.
flockoff
Ehh. We all know it wasn't the holy spooky and anything's possible with criminals, but I don't think this guy could've worked up the nerve to go in there and try to rob a store at gunpoint if he's weak and susceptible enough to listen to her and think "oh shit, Jesus is watching!" I agree with the people who have said he had no real intention of shooting someone and once he realized he couldn't control the would-be victim with fear alone he was out of options. The religious robber explanation seems doubtful because a person who cares about her saying that is probably already using god to justify their actions and would see her as a false prophet or something -- now there's a bad twist of irony. ConureDelSol
That or he walked in, heard her start blabbering about Jebus to him and realized that he'd rather go than listen to her bullshit.

flockoff
I thought about that, but if it's faked by the network what interest does trutv have in a religious story? Although I sometimes watch these world's dumbest criminals and wonder how they could possibly be real. In any event it's possible to have happened somewhere, if not here.
