Sybaris
During the "I'm a better Christian than you" open mic' session at church today one woman got up and commented on the woes of another follower. She made the claim that their god betsows us with adversities and tragedies to teach and strengthen us and that we should all be thankful for the anguish in our lives. Really? Maybe go ask the parents of a harlequin baby if they were thankful. Or maybe ask some Japanese that got all their relatives sucked out to sea. I'm sure there's plenty of Jewish families who are thankful for the Nazi's. Incredible, simply fucking incredible how christards perpetuate this fault free diety. I know why they do it but under the microscope it's so perverse. It's like the TV interviews of the parents of murderers and rapists, "Oh they would NEVER do anything like that. My child would never hurt anyone!"
Positivist
She made the claim that their god betsows us with adversities and tragedies to teach and strengthen us and that we should all be thankful for the anguish in our lives. It's cowardly to be thankful for the hardships in others' lives. It's a different story when it comes knocking on your own door. Ugh. Makes my glad I've left this cruel insanity behind! Moderator Margee Posted January 15, 2012 Moderator Share Posted January 15, 2012 We have to make all those 'excuses' for god - it's the only way we can keep believing.............
ireckinso
Yes god does need many excuses. Its like when I drink to much and get up the next day feeling like crap. I always blame it on not eating dinner, or being worn out from work and so on and so on. Until I look at the empty bottle of rum and then go "oh yeah thats why." A believer never sees that empty bottle, they just make up excuses.
dagnarus
I remember having arguments with god about the immorality of his actions. It always ran up against the same basic problem, he could kill me with a thought, I couldn't so much as touch him, he my every last thought and action, I was incapable of doing anything to him, He was powerful I was weak. In a sense I think christianity describes the perfect dystopian nightmare in the that your living in a world in you cannot do anything against the ultimate authority, God. If he want to fuck with you what can you do, There no legal system which you can appeal to, There no ways you can take up arms against, Hell you can't even strap dynamite to your chest and suicide bomb him as an act of spite. Given this there are really only two possible choices the prospective dissident can see himself as having, Agree with god that hate is love, war is peace, and that little children dying of disease and famine is for the greater good, or tell god to go fuck himself and get yourself sent to the eternal torture chamber down below. Worse still you can't even just play lip service to his absolute greatness you've also got to really truly believe it because he's in your head, and knows you're every last subversive thought. Humans are programmed to survive, and instinctually know that they would both want that kind of power on their side, but more importantly that they don't want to piss it off. Kurari
I've always LOATHED that line of thinking. Not just in terms of God, but people do it about each other too. I've heard all my life, "You should be grateful for your abusive tormentor because in spite of all the hardships they've inflicted on you, they have made you the strong and wise person you are today." It's such a loathesome backhanded compliment that steals your rights and power as a victim. I know it's supposed to be a "you overcame" kind of a statement, but it's really just dippy hippy hogwash saying, "You don't have a right to feel the way you feel, so shut up and be happy." No, I will not be grateful for evil people in my life. They were fucked up and revolting pieces of shit that deserve to have acid thrown in their faces. Dealing with the horrors they've inflicted on me was a case of either grow or die. I'm grateful only to the people who were there for me with kindness and compassion to help me when I needed them most. I'm grateful to myself for my own courage and strength to save myself. I will never, ever be thankful to anybody who is and was an abusive asshole. I am NOT thankful for natural disasters killing people (although I'm not angry with them because, well, it's silly to be angry at the weather or the Earth or whatever). There's no shame in just out and out saying, "This person/situation is abysmally shitty."

Sybaris
Coincidently today a relative of mine posted this on FB: "If you're going through something hard and wondering where God is, remember the teacher is always quiet during a test." No you fuckwit! It's quiet because it's not THERE! This is one of the (many) reasons I left Christianity - I was sick and tired of being "tested" ALL the fucking time even though I hadn't done anything wrong, always prayed, and was being the best person I can be. What kind of sadistic God puts people through shit for no fucking reason??? Maybe he should fucking give all of these evil people a "test" instead of people who aren't doing anything wrong! ConureDelSol
Another way they do this is when you have a chronic illness or permanent deformity, they like to say this: "You're in this situation because God wanted to use you to reach out to other sick/deformed people." Bull fucking shit. I got this from my dad when I found out I have a rare immune disease that causes me more pain than the average person on a daily basis. That or, "We'll pray over you and God will make people believe by healing you." Well, the entire church and one of the largest international women's prayer circles have prayed for me. I still have the disease. Fuck that.

She made the claim that their god betsows us with adversities and tragedies to teach and strengthen us and that we should all be thankful for the anguish in our lives. So God gives us things we ask for but also gives us adversity and tragedy. You don't have to be religious to experience ups and downs of life. Hey, I bet that the eternal torture of hell is just one of god's tests to build character and make us strong. With all the adversity of hell, you got to admit those souls are STRONG ! BrotherJosh
It's easier for Christians in first world countries to say these things because let's be honest, putting up with half of our "problems" pale in comparison to someone digging through a dump in a third world country. And I don't mean to say that people in first world countries don't suffer or dismiss everything we go through. However, as many have pointed out, it's easy to say God is just "testing" you when we still have some comforts and style of living that offset much of our suffering. expat674
Another catch phrase is " they are suffering because god wants to point out some hidden sin their your lives." It is never, ever god's fault.
Sunny49
To abuse someone is a sin, but then God uses someone to abuse you to strengthen you. But, that guy made a sin afterall he needs to repent. WTF?
