HappySlap Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I don't understand how christians say they interpret the bible literally and you have to live by the entire bible to understand it. Reading and studying the bible this way is what led me away from christianity because the entire bible is full of contradiction and so much hate, rape, etc done by and condoned by god! How do these fundamental christians view the bible this way and actually believe god is so loving?!?!?
Eugene39 Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 How do these fundamental christians view the bible this way and actually believe god is so loving?!?!? There's multiple mind games in play with their logic. The rape and murder was judgement because they "filled their cup of iniquity". Therefore it is justified. God set the rules so we have to play by them, and God's rules don't apply to God. God gets a free pass to do whatever He wants because He is God, and His ways are higher than our ways. Obviously, they don't live by the whole Bible either, Paul's writings of how the law no longer applies is held in higher regard than Jesus' teachings. And of course, God loved you so much that He was willing to have His only Son crucified. And I'm certain I missed a few. While I don't consider myself to be a deist, their view that God is manifested in nature makes much more sense than the belief that God is shown to us through "revealed religion". Nature can be a loving place, but can also be a very chaotic, destructive place. To me, if there is God, then It is both good and evil, or there could be two Gods, one who sends good and another who sends evil. The concept of God sending both good and evil is in the Bible in several places, although Christian apologists have their line of reasoning that it doesn't say what it says.
Deva Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Fundamental Christians go by what the pastor says the Bible says. They have no sense of history. Its like God spoke it yesterday. Its incredibly naive and really stupid. They have blinders on and don't want to believe the Bible has to be interpreted. Its like a newspaper to them. Or they chant verses like mantras (which I can better understand). 1
Foxy Methoxy Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 If you can't believe in talking serpents, talking donkeys, prophet avenging she-bears, et al, what can you believe in? 1
lunaticheathen Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 They don't believe it all literally. They can't. They may think they do, but they don't eat kosher, don't kill their children when they are unruly (well, most don't), don't own slaves, don't forgive debts every 7 years, etc ad nauseum. But that thing about the gays, that's totally literal, and Jeebus didn't change that. Just died so we can have bacon. Makes perfect sense. 2
Sunny49 Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 It's funny how they some some things in Bible are literal and some need interpretation....now, who decides that?
Guest Valk0010 Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Its saying whatever you can to put off the evil hour of saying, "Im wrong and wasted my life."
Foxy Methoxy Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Just died so we can have bacon. Makes perfect sense. LOL! Hey, you just made this religion better to me. Jesus died so we could eat pork. That's kind of awesome!
ConureDelSol Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I bet they eat shellfish and wear clothing of different materials too. Living by the Bible and taking it literally is impossible. Although, maybe we should encourage it. The Bible says something about believers being able to be bitten by venomous snakes and not get sick...I don't mind thinning the Christian population a little...
