Goodbye Jesus

Today At Church

So Monday we found out that dad is going to need a pacemaker. He has sick sinus syndrome which basically means for him that his heart beats too slow. Anywho, today at church near the end of worship after we had all been summoned to the front to pray against fear...dad's heart started racing and he got real faint. People started to lay hands on him and pray and then helped him to the foyer. I grabbed my shit and sat on the stairs wanting so much to yell, "YOU MOTHERFUCKERS CALL A FUCKING AMBULANCE!!!!" As usual I didn't since I am basically invisible at church...you know that person that sits in the back...yeah that one. Mom was one of the people praying and I pulled her aside and suggested that they get him to a hospital. His face was so pale and that's saying something since my dad is really tan. So we finally got dad to the car and drove to the hospital. I walked dad to a wheelchair and wheeled him into the ER. After two questions from the receptionist dad gets taken back immediately to get an EKG. About the only funny thing happened was when one of techs walked in an saw me holding dad's hand....she about fainted from shock. It was funny but I digress. Mom walked in from parking and I went to wait in the waiting room. Dad was wheeled out and after another Q & A session, we waited some more. After about 15-30 minutes they took dad to the back and a friend picked me up from the hospital and drove me home. Blah blah blah...so basically dad's probably gonna have his pacemaker put in tomorrow but the moral of this experience is that medical attention was needed immediately and the idiots were all praying. Really!? That's my dad's health you are fucking with!!!!

But God is the great physician! Calling a doctor would've shown a lack of faith.

Of course if he'd died then they could say God wanted him at home with him... God is always the hero, even though he doesn't do shit.

Honestly, I don't think I could be in your shoes and stay quiet. The last time I went to church (I was bored) and tried to stay incognito, I only got so far as the prayer book before writing out how my prayer was for God to provide objective proof that he exists. :P B

Best of luck with your dad and his surgery. Sounds like a scary time.

Wow. Just... wow.

The first pentecostal church I ever went to we didn't have this shit happen, and I think it had a lot to do with the head pastor being a former nurse. He told me once about this time when a woman in the church called him up. She said to him, "pastor, I think there's something wrong with my relationship with god." He asked her what she meant, and she said, "well, I keep trying to pray and have my devotional, but this really heavy feeling keeps coming over me, I just don't know what is going on." He said to her, "do you have pain going down your left arm?" and she replied, "yes! How did you know?!" And he said, because there's nothing wrong with your relationship with god, you're having a heart attack. Hang up and call an ambulance."

Sure enough, the woman was having a heart attack. Just as well the pastor was a former nurse- she survived because of it.

But I'm so sorry to hear about your father, and the bat-shit crazy fundies who risked his life with their stupidity. They have definitely earned the right to be called christards! Let us know how he goes- I'm thinking of you.

Sending you a hug :)

I would like to think people would get past their own ego and call an ambulance for a friend in need. Apparently, being the, "one who prayed and he wazza healed" is more important.

Sorry to hear about your dad, by the way. I hope he gets better after the pacemaker.

Glad your dad made it. Next time there is a medical emergency speak up sooner. It's a big responsibility being the sanest guy in the room. You have to be there for these people so they don't poke out their own eye with a pencil. Don't let them have scissors. Don't let them climb on the furniture. Oh and don't let them climb up to the roof because they might decide they can fly. Watch out for snake charming and drinking poison.

They sent dad home and told him to call his cardiologist today. Mom is staying home as well. I have to drive to Austin, TX for an interview/testing but I'm hoping that they go ahead and put the pacemaker in so his heart rate can stay stable. He was up and walking around this morning...so that's good. I should have spoken up, however, my reluctance to have someone pray for my shoulder earlier is clear proof to them that I lack faith. The second they start the whole poison bit...I'm out. Doubt they'll do that though since I think they think those people are crazy....however not calling an ambulance really upset me. They could have called someone or loaded him into mom's car and prayed after. God doesn't heal amputees...even amputees with heart problems.

Be ready for next Sunday. With dozens of medial professionals working on your dad all this time your church is probably going to credit God and their own prayers.

Ugh. I know right.

"God healed his heart."

"Um no he didn't. Last time I checked a surgeon put a pacemaker in him to make his heart beat regularly."

Coming from my dad this morning...

"God kept me from harm...."

"Well I guess no harm done means that you didn't lose your right hand to an explosion. Gotta give God credit for only blowing off your hand and not your head...." what I was thinking...also fighting back tears thinking this. To hear my dad say this and know how deluded he his. I hate that he has this false hope. No longer does this thinking comfort me. Although, I am confident in the medical training that the doctors have recieved and much thankful that they are putting this device in.

"Today at Church" Those who know me would faint if I typed those words!

I'm glad your dad is OK.

I was raised pentecostal holiness. They believed heartily in prayer healins' but in a decade of "annointin' with oil" and such I never saw anybody cured of anything, including me. They'd shut down any clinic with that record.

Temporary situation...a requirement for living with the parents. Once I move out I plan to not darken the door way unless it's for a wedding or a funeral.

I've witnessed a similar situation before although admittedly in much less urgent circumstances. Someone hurts themselves in church and instead of finding some ice, a towel, a chair and a glass of water it's "has anybody prayed yet?" while they're still on the floor. Even as a believer I thought that it was a step too far.
