Vigile
I tend to shy away from anything that looks like claims of utopia, but at the same time, I think it's important to challenge deeply-rooted beliefs and put everything we know to the test. Peter Joseph makes some very interesting points, and while I don't believe his ideas are yet well-vetted, he makes sound criticisms toward our current monetary system and offers some really interesting potential solutions utilizing currently available technology. I believe it's something that anyone who considers themselves a free thinker should at least be aware of and weigh the merits of his claims and ideas as we are certainly headed toward an ugly future if we don't change course from our purely consumer-based economic system; this is especially true as more and more jobs become obsolete via technology and resources are depleted through waste instead of focusing more on efficient uses of them. I warn you, it's a very involved lecture, so you need to be paying close attention and have some free time to wade through it. http://topdocumentar...e-are-we-going/
Deva
I have only watched about 10 minutes of the Nathan Phelps video, I can see a LOT of parallels between this kind of religion and what I was raised in. Its only a bit more extreme - same basic doctrine. Its a miracle of sorts that I got out of it.
London
I have only watched about 10 minutes of the Nathan Phelps video, I can see a LOT of parallels between this kind of religion and what I was raised in. Its only a bit more extreme - same basic doctrine. Its a miracle of sorts that I got out of it. I'm sorry to hear that, I am glad you got out it's just so sad. I have a friend who grew up in a household where the church they attended was her fathers in their basement. It's not a healthy situation. This is one of the worst things that religion produces and I suspect that an untreated chronically mental illness can develop into this type of abuse. YellowJacket
The Story of Marjoe: All about child preacher Marjoe - he comes back as a non-believing adult, pretending to be a true believer, to preach in the pentecostal church he was raised in. It is an excellent doc for anyone who wants to have a clear understanding of emotional manipulation in the church. Another good doc comes from NOVA, The Elegant Universe, which is all about string theory: FTFY http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-178629120699935619
