nerdasaurus
Anyone? It always seems that whenever us ex-Christians faced trouble in the past, we'd get slammed with this verse. I couldn't stand this phrase when I was a Christian, and I hate it even more after leaving the church. Who's with me?
oddbird1963
I agree. This is one of those cherry picked, cliche quotes Christians pop on you when you're trying to talk about something real going on with you. It's trying to fix you with a generic, one size fits all solution stand in rather than engage in active listening, empathy and supportiveness. Why bother with all that when you can quote from the holy magic spell book?
Eugene39
No doubt. There was a girl that was in 4th grade when I was a senior at a Christian Day School. I don't really remember her. Anyway, she had married and had two kids. They were traveling back home from a weekend vacation when the husband who had been suffering from a horrible headache, apparently passed out and the car ended up in a pond. She and the two kids died at the scene but he was able to get out. The guilt that he suffered from pushed him over the edge and he committed suicide by exhaust fumes with a Bible and a picture of his family on the seat beside him. Him committing suicide didn't sit well in the fundamentalist circles that I came out of. That verse was one that was mentioned, and that it was too bad that he hadn't submitted to the will of God. I still feel rage.
dyanaprajna0
Don't even get me started on this. I'll rant for hours.
Cryptic
I've not been slammed with this verse before. What is it about this verse that sets you off? I'm looking at it right now and the light bulb isn't turning on.
Zephie
The verse talks about all the good plans that god has for you....plans to prosper...a future...a hope. If this verse were to ring true then the people who followed god would be prosperous...not just financially but in life...lives wouldn't be cut short by disease...the world could be a much better place than it is currently. Christians offer this verse to encourage each other when times are tough or, as in my case, to offer some platitude when crappy things happen. Usually when it's offered, it is offered in a condescending manner and that, in general, pisses people off.
