Elie Wiesel Believes In God?

How is this possible? I'm reading a speech by Elie Wiesel for an English class and in it he writes, " We felt that to be abandoned by God was worse than to be punished by Him. Better an unjust God than an indifferent one. For us to be ignored by God was a harsher punishment than to be a victim of His anger. Man can live far from God - not outside God. God is wherever we are. Even in suffering? Even in suffering."

What sort of logic could possibly make continued belief in god feasible for this man or others like him? Curious for opinions.

Interesting I didn't realize that he did, he sure sounds like he lost his faith in Night, but perhaps he regained it as he got older.

This was a fairly recent speech made to President Clinton.
