If you guys can watch this without wanting to kick the next priest you see in the teeth, you're more sedate than I.

Goodbye Jesus

I have seen this documentary. It was absolutely horrific. However, by the time I watched it, I was so close to losing my faith and so disenchanted with god, the church, and christians in general, I was neither surprised nor shocked, just thoroughly disgusted. And my heart broke so much for the Japanese father of one girl- he was just so utterly shattered. This priest didn't just hurt the children he molested and raped, but the families of those children, too. The most sickening part of the doco, the one that really made me furious, was the rape of babies. What kind of sick fuck...??!!

Key points for me:

-the priest who openly admits raping tons of kids lives free in Ireland out of the jurisdiction of prosecutors in CA and gets a pension from the church.

-100,000 people in the US alone have come forward claiming they were abused.

Think about that statement. It must be a fraction of those actually abused as this is something most people would be afraid to admit. It indicates full blown, rampant abuse as a core culture of the Catholic church if accurate. How in the hell is Islam our primary enemy, our primary threat, here? The Catholic church is involved in wholesale abuse of our children. What larger threat to our personal lives exists than this?

How is it we can make the argument that the xian religion has evolved beyond Islam when this kind of shit is taking place virtually out in the open and without recompense?

It seems to me that Catholic culture and community keeps the dutiful members loyal. Decent people should leave that corrupt institution en masse (no pun intended!) but they remain in willful denial in order to maintain their identity as a Catholic. It's just sick how religions play into human foibles.

Wake up, people! Catholics, by counting yourself among them you tacitly condone their evil - regardless of what you may say to the contrary. If you remain catholic, you are guilty of complicity. The church should go out of business and its management team should all be prosecuted rather than protected. How anyone can want to claim affiliation with that cancerous institution is beyond me.

Or a hapless victim. I think that's the case with a lot of them.

Free thinker groups need to stop wasting their money on billboards and start spending it on PR firms. The difference between a loved and hated institution, policy position, what have you, in the eyes of the public, is spin and media coverage.

But I agree with you. Good people, and not just 'good' Catholics, ought to be lining up outside parish houses with pitch forks. They would be if the abusers were just creepy old guys with no institutional affiliation. That taboo needs to be snuffed.

Catholicism developed doctrine to account for errant priests early on. I forget what it's called, but the doctrine says that a sacrament is unaffected by the corruption of the priest because it is the sacrament that is holy and not the priest. It kinda negates the respondeat superior logic from gaining purchase with the flock. Jesus would be the only individual who would qualify for that theory theologically speaking.

I just watched this documentary. Disgusting. And the recent pope was a big part of the cover-up. Yet, Catholics attempt to play it down as something blown out of proportion by the media. Actually it's WORSE than what is in the media! And these are the people who are trying to pass themselves as the gatekeepers of the morals of society and want to dictate our morals! No, thank you! In my country the Catholic church has just manipulated God into are new constitution and that marriage should be between woman and man (so far it wasn't in the constitution). They are also trying to restrict abortion and the government is passing many schools (which were so far secular) in their hands. But when there was a pedophile priest scandal here (because there was one here too, "of course") they tried to sweep it under the carpet here as well. Yet, people think of the churches (and the biggest of them here is the Catholic) as some good, moral institutions whom we need because otherwise what would become of our morals. People are sheep! Wendystop.gif

I always wondered why is pedophilia so wide-spread in the Catholic church and this film helped me to understand. The part where they talked about how priest go to a seminary at the age 15-16 or so and from then on they get a pretty unhealthy view on sexuality - at a time when their own sexuality is developing (and I guess many get molested too which they then pass on). Christianity as a whole has a pretty fucked-up view on human sexuality but Catholicism with its celibacy is even worse. And of course, that doctrine started out as a mean of control (what else?): so that when priests died they would not pass their wealth to their children but to the church.

According to Wikipedia since the documentary O'Grady has been working for the church again in the Netherlands and he also offended again:

Since his deportation to Ireland in 2001, he has been reported as living in Thurles and the Dublin suburb of Phibsboro. In October, 2006, it was reported that he had left Ireland possibly for France and "may be en route to Canada". In 2007 the Irish Examiner reported O'Grady's solicitor claiming O'Grady registered voluntarily with the local Gardaí.[8] In October, 2007, the rented house where he was living in Dundalk was burgled and damaged. In October 2008 it was reported that California-based lawyers were considering offering a reward for information about his whereabouts in Ireland so further civil actions could be pursued against him. In March 2010 he was reported living in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where he volunteered at a Catholic parish, assuming a different identity, calling himself “Brother Francis”.[9] In December 2010 he was arrested in Dublin for possession of child pornography. The victims were as young as two years old.[10] Authorities discovered child pornography photos and videos on O'Grady's laptop, on an external hard drive, and on a USB key. Judge Patrick McMahon remanded O’Grady on continuing bail to appear again on January 28th. As part of his bail conditions O’Grady must sign on twice daily at Dublin's Harcourt Terrace Garda station, and surrendered his passport.[11]

And here is the original article about his latest arrest: http://www.lodinews....a4af74a8ae.html

Convicted pedophile priest Oliver O'Grady, who served at St. Anne's Catholic Church in the 1970s, was arrested on Friday on charges of possessing thousands of pictures of child pornography, according to the Dublin Times newspaper in Ireland and Catholic canon lawyer Patrick Wall.

Since being deported to Ireland, O'Grady moved to Holland, where he volunteered at a parish and organized birthday parties at a McDonald's restaurant there, Wall said. He grew a beard and went by Brother Francis (Francis is his middle name), Wall added.

"We don't blame Oliver," Wall said. "He can't control himself. It was the people who were supposed to supervise him (we blame).

"The only reason it came out is that, like all criminals, Oliver made a mistake," Wall said. "He was coming back (to Ireland) from Holland and left his laptop on the plane."

Authorities found videos and still photos of child pornography on his computer, with victims as young as the age of 2, Wall said.

It's really rich that these are the same assholes trying to legislate our morality.

It appears to me there are two species of humans on the planet. Those with their heads up their asses who can't even recognize the simplest of contradictions, and reasonable people not controlled by taboo.

I'm still astounded at the level of abuse that we now know about and the way this has been allowed to be downplayed.

They have the nerve, don't they?

And I cannot believe people are still buying their shit. I mean, people in my country (and many others) freak out at the though of gay marriage - not least because churches tell them how immoral homosexuality is and if we allow gay marriage that will result in the decandence of our society and high morals bla-bla-bla. Yet, everybody turns a blind eye on what the Catholic church is doing to children and don't see the freaking irony of it that they are giving credit to these people about morals! And yes, it's not only individual priests, it's the whole fucking church, who cover-up for these priests! I agree with your conclusion: most people are are simply sheep who aren't able to see through the simplest deciet and contradiction! No wonder religions have strived all through human history.

In the documentary they said they don't view pedophilia as any more of a sin than any other sexual activity which breaks celibacy. WTF? This shows once again how fucked up Christian "morals" are!

Just for a bit of real dark humor, I recently found this on a web page collecting what's supposed to be the most witty/bizarre/whatever lines in German chats (I'm translating to English for everyone's convenience)...

"A catholic priest, a child rapist and a pedophile enter a bar.

He orders a beer."

Part of me wants to laugh every time I remember the line, the other part... well you get the idea. Still, methinks it can be a nice comeback against those who claim that catholics are all soooooooo innocent and holy...

ALL of my catholic friends make the excuse that every religion has got 'dirt'........ that's their excuse..........

You can respond by saying that at least other churches aren't complicit in an ongoing, widespread cover up effort that permeates all the way to the top of the church.
