Facebook Official?

My generation tends to think, "Oh, it's not real til' it's on Facebook." Change your relationship status, then you're a couple...post the pictures, then it happened. So for the socially networked among us: are you "religion official"?

(If you don't have a Facebook, more power to you. Alas, I need one to advertise/connect with people for the freelance photography I do, but it often ends up being a waste of time.)

I kept the religion option blank on mine, then quit altogether.

I'm out on Facebook. If people don't like it, and their friendships are predicated on having the same exact beliefs and opinions as everyone else...well, they can fuck off.

I have nothing on my facebook. I use it only because for some groups, it's the only way to arrange meetings (community organizations, etc.). I have even disabled my ability to post status updates, for fear of what I'm going to say that will tip my social apple cart. I don't engage with anything. It's merely a shingle I hang out to say I digitally exist.

I hate facebook.

I am an adoptee and two and a half years ago I located my original mother through facebook so it's actually quite precious in that respect for me. I know it's mostly a time waster but the connection to my biological family is so valuable to me (this discovery is one aspect of my deconversion I didn't mention in my extimony and it's significant but that's another matter)

I traveled to the UK last fall to meet my family for the first time in 48 years. It was magic.

Facebook has it's value and the above example is just one. I could not have located my mum without this social media being around, simply impossible.

but yes, the other 87% is pure bogswirl.

Freethinker on FB. And yes, the more time you spend on FB the more you hate it. :-)

I'm on Facebook and I don't really know why. I know it's fashionable to hate on it but it's not that I hate it, it's just I don't really use it for what's it designed for: communicating and sharing photos/experiences/whatever with friends. I essentially just use it to post funny pictures.

As for the religion thing, I've got it set to Pastafarian IIRC. If I got into a relationship with someone, I'd be hesitant to make that public..to much to worry about in terms of social protocol. Easier to leave it blank.

I've been meaning to get around to changing my religion status. Might go do that.

Honestly, it won't even be that huge of a deal. People rarely look at info pages anyway. Only a few people noticed when I changed mine to "freethinker"...but even when they do, it can be the catalyst for some good debates!

I'm at the point where I just don't give a shit anymore. But i don't have many christards on FB, either. I just changed it to Atheist.

I find Facebook to be rather practical. Its a great way for me to keep in touch with friends back home.

Funny that this should come up today - I just changed my Facebook profile yesterday. With much fear and trepidation I (gasp) deleted my religion from my Facebook. It had said Christian and I just took that off so now there's nothing. I haven't come out to my family yet except for my husband and my sympathetic cousin, so I was scared even to delete it for fear my mom would, for some reason, look at my profile and ask why it's not there. So just to be safe, I deleted my hometown as well (it wasn't accurate anyway because I hadn't updated it since I moved) and I figured that if anyone asked, then I could just say that the less information that's on Facebook, the better. Gotta be careful of those internet predators you know! Fortunately, no one has noticed yet and I don't think they will. But it's sad when we (well, some of us) have to hide like this for fear of our families being angry, or worse, disappointed.

...I thought hometown referred to where you grew up?

I am thinking about putting the link (if it lets me)to the George Carlin, "religion is bullshit" you tube video in that box.

OK, I know I said I'm not ever on F*c*book, but I got into a pissing competition on it yesterday. A fundy (who is not examining his beliefs but who mistakenly thinks he's on the cutting edge of avant garde Christianity) posted a link to an article that first of all bashed atheists and then the article proceeded to equalize all religions (atheism is a religion, didja know?) in terms of the atrocities committed. Atheists came out the bad guys. You know, they are so militant....etc. etc.

Well, I should have kept my mouth shut. I'm not "out" on F*c*book, so I was challenging the fundy's thinking with questions that could have come from a progressive Xian or a die-hard atheist. I had fun poking and got "friended" by an atheist over it too. In between discussing unanswerable questions on the fundy's status, me and my new atheist friend were messaging each other. It was a riot!

I'd love to post it here but I'm in the closet and fear being recognized. Maybe next week once the whole storm dies down.

Damn F*c*book!
