Moderator Margee Posted April 8, 2012 Moderator Share Posted April 8, 2012 This is part of the conversation around my dining table tonight with my 7 year old grandson who has not been indoctrinated in any way, shape or form at all, by me or his mom and dad. Boy: Nanny, who was jesus? Me: He was supposed to be god in a human's body. Boy: How he he get in a human body? Me: The invisable god who lives in the sky put himself in a human body so he could walk on earth as a human. Everyone then called him jesus. Jesus called himself 'the son' of god. Boy: (shrugging shoulders) Why didn't god just walk on the earth before he made himself into a man? Me: I'm not really sure why. I asked the same questions. Boy: So what has easter got to do with jesus? Me: Well, you see, darling.....Jesus died and rose from the dead on this date, hundreds of years ago. Boy: How did he die? Me: Well, people put him on a tree made like a cross and killed him because they didn't believe what he was saying. Boy: But if he was god... why didn't they believe him and how could he be killed? Me: Because he was in a human form, and that made him have a body like yours and mine...... and now he could die even though he was god... he was trapped in a human body and human men die. You know we will all die one day, don't you sweetie - that's why we have to be careful looking out for cars on the street. Boy: (Glazed over look) He was god? That sounds stupid. Did he really die? Me: Yes, they buried him and put a big rock over his grave but he got out and rose from the dead and appeared to many people living back then. Boy: Is he still living? Me: Only in the spirit they say - we can't see him. He is gone invisable again. Boy: Why can't he appear again? Me: I've asked the same questions honey. Boy: Nanny......... that's the stupidest story......... Boy: Nanny how come the easter bunny is real? I then changed the topic to the candy he got....... I just love this little guy!
Guest Babylonian Dream
Sounds like he's on the right track. It makes me laugh how he decided that the easter bunny sounded more real than Jesus. It is just subjective, whichever one seems more realistic also plays into it. He'll lose that belief too. To be honest, the easter bunny and santa clause are both more realistic than Jesus, to his credit. He'll grow up smart and not fall into the faith trap hopefully.

Positivist
Boy: Nanny......... that's the stupidest story......... Now *that* is both funny and telling! I read somewhere that the first 7 years of a child's life are really important for indoctrination because children don't have the reasoning skills or defenses to reject anything at that age. Everything they hear, especially from parents, is swallowed whole, without questions, and goes down the intellectual hatch as Truth. Now that your grandson is 7 and you tell him the Christian story for the first time, his logic ability repels even the details, in addition to the whole. So very interesting! And funny as hell!
